Just starting out with step!

  • So I've started my journey, I'm eating healthy, and I just purchased a block for step aerobics. I'm asking for suggestions for how many days a week i should step and for how long. My weight right now is probably 275ish. I'd like to achieve some sort of balance between getting steady results and keeping things realistic and manageable so I can keep this going for a while.

    Any thoughts??

Words of encouragement are also welcome
  • Hi Chickeroo!

I used to teach step areobics, and I love it sooooo much!
Firstly, like anything take it easy at first. Do you have a video you can follow?
I would suggest 20 minutes 3 times a week for a beginner. Then bump it to 30, and so on.
You will, of course, get the girls that will jump on this thread and tell you to go all out, but for now you need to train your legs for going up and down. Your muscles will get stronger and your joints looser. I would leave a day inbetween for resting your joints.

If you are just starting out working out (or starting again) then the above is both realistic and managable.
I would also suggest using some small hand weights for after your step workout OR on alternate days.

    AND welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yea, and some pointers, to avoid injuries,
make sure your foot is fully on the step, (not just your front or back or side of foot)
you can jump on the step, but never off
keep your abs tight (as with any workout)
step up with your whole body (don't hunch your back and shoulders)
  • I did aerobics after my second child. I lost 15lbs in 1 month. I was looking good! But um yea do what the other lady above me said. TAKE IT EASY! I worked out at my school. The results were amazing. But remember to do weight training as well. Or you will be left with a lean and NOT so tight body. GOOD LUCK! Its worth it.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm looking for a step dvd on target.com because i have a gift card and am otherwise strapped for cash. what are your opinions on the following:

Kathy Smith Great Buns and Thighs Step
    Gilad's Step Aerobics
    Kari Anderson Go Step
    Christi Taylor totally cool step
Patrick Goudeau's Step Appeal/step my way

I'm in a dorm room so I don't have a lot of room for fancy dancing so I'd like one with simpler steps but is still a great cardio workout. Thanks so much for any advice
