airplans and airports.

  • ok, so on the 16th of feb. i'm taking a basketball trip to germany. on the island that i live on there is nooooo fast food. we only have a subway. thats it. so, i don't have any temptations to go out and eat bad foods when ever i want. we are going to be spending a WHOLE day of traveling to get to germany. we'll get to one airport at about 10am to leave, and arrive in germany at about 11pm. we usually have a 4 hour layover in the lisbon airport when ever our school sports teams travel. so we'll be surrounded by the fast food that we've been deprived of for months. we will be in germany for the week then come back the same way.

what should i do to avoid over eatting at the airports?? i'm nervous that i'm going to gain all my weight back on this trip. i'm going to try hard to not eat badly all the time. but since we won't be with our families (just highschoolers and 6 chaperones) we'll have to eat at food courts the whole time. it's going to be really unhealthy. i'm always going to have a water with me but what else should i do??
  • I follow a vegan diet and I travel. I basically find the best options I can that fit within my eating plan. Can you also take snacks with you to the airports such as Nuts, fruit, etc?
  • Fast food does have some negatives (like lots of terribly unhealthy items to choose from). It also has some positives, though...nearly all fast food establishments post their nutritionals online, and nearly all of them have at least a couple of healthy options available.

So you probably have some idea of the sort of restaurants you'll be eating at...find their websites. I don't know what is over in Germany, but if they are a fairly large chain, info should be pretty easy to come by. Make a list of 3-4 things at each place that are better-than-average choices.

If I were you, I'd also make a list of things that you would consider a "treat", but that are a reasonable amount of calories...this will allow you to, a few times, have a little something "extra" to satisfy your cravings without blowing the calorie bank. For example, a McDonald's ice cream cone isn't made of the world's healthiest ingredients, but it has 150 calories and can be really satisfying if you feel you need a treat. A small french fry has 230 calories. Again, not the kind of choice you want to make every day, but once during the trip? Not a deal breaker.

Finally, I'd pack all kinds of healthy, nutritious snacks in my bag. Protein bars, high-protein oatmeal packets, and sturdy fruits (like oranges and apples) are my go-tos in this kind of situation. You might also ask your coach/chaperones if, when you arrive, you can hit a grocery store for healthy foods to eat for breakfast/snacks. I'm assuming you're playing basketball over there, so you might work from a "If we have quality food, rather than fast food, it'll help our performance" angle.
  • When I fly (out of the Burbank airport) I get a Subway sandwich for the trip...you can take food through security, just not drinks.

If I know I'll be very busy, I get a 12" one and eat half on the plane, half at the hotel.

Anyhow....there are ALWAYS decent choices at the food courts, even if it's only a food court green salad.

My advice is to have small protein-rich snacks with you (cashews, or a Luna bar or something) so that if all you can scrounge up is salad or fruit salad, you will be fine until you can get to your destination.
  • alright, i'll try to look up some of the places online before i go. i'll deffenatly bring some good snacks along with me and we will be staying at a hotel in heidelberg(spelling??) so i'll try to ask to go to some type of food store to buy fresh foods.

i always get grumpy on planes. i hate sitting next to people that take up to much room. lol.
  • Oh and a lot of airports will list what places they have at the airport so you can plan ahead that way as well.
