Question about Calories

  • Lately I've been having 3-4 small meals a day, ranging from 400-600 a piece. The 600 is on days I only have 3, so each day it comes to a total of about 1600-2000 calories. Except on one day a week where I get about 2500, calorie cycling and all.
    Is this too little for my current weight? Will it end up affecting my metabolism?

  • I started out at 340 and my personal trainer put me on 1800 calories a day. Most days I'm pretty close on target, never going under 1600 and rarely ever going over 1800. For five months I lost an average of 3.6 pounds per week. The past month it has slowed down slightly, but I'm still losing. From the little details you gave us I think you are doing ok. I wouldn't recommend going under 1600. You also want to be sure that you are eating a healthy balance of those calories. I eat lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, yogurt, cottage cheese, healthy fats. As much as possible I avoid processed food. I drink water, crystal light, green tea and the occasional black tea. I mostly avoid caffeine. I should also mention that I do exercise 7 days a week, 3 of those days involve strength training.

  • Thank you both! I thought it was a good place to start, but I read a few other threads and people were suggesting starting at 2500 for people that weighed about 330, so I wasn't sure what to think.
  • AngelsEulogy -- RN BSN's question was a good one to help us. At your weight 3 pounds a week is fine (though you may not stay at that rate!) Everyone's different, so it requires experimentation!
