Hi all. I have been travelling a lot lately for work. I am having issues staying on plan when I eat out. I usually start off good with a salad, but then for dinner I will have some bread and some rice. Does anybody else eat out a lot? What kinds of things do you eat? I think part of the problem is that I can't do the box half it up rule since we don't have fridges in our hotel rooms. I think everyone that I am with would look at my strange if I had them box it up anyway to throw away later. Although, maybe if I tell them why I am doing that they won't look at me quite so strange. I have been so off plan and depressed all week. I just want to get back on track but I know I have another week on the road ahead of me. Maybe it's time for a new job...
beachbabe, I too travel quite a bit for work. It's hard to stay on plan, but it can be done.
First thing I do is pack snacks to take with me. I usually take protein water drink mixes, snack packs of nuts, individually wrapped cheese snacks, whole grain crackers, hard boiled eggs, a bag of raw veggies, individual hummus, pouches of tuna, South Beach bars (this is the only time I eat these, because I binge on them at home). In a pinch I can make a meal out of this stuff. The eggs, cheese, and veggies will keep for a day or two out of the fridge, unless it's hot weather. I am never sure about the hummus, I have had to throw it away at security once, but other times it's passed no problem. I can stick in in my ziploc bag with my toiletries if it's small enough.
Second, I don't eat out unless I have to. I can usually find a grocery store or Super Walmart or Target near where I am staying. I pick up some waters, V8s, sugar free applesauce, or I can buy a lunch or dinner there - there's usually individually packaged veggies and dip or hummus, salads, etc.
If I have to eat out, or I want to go out with a group, I start with a salad, then I can usually find something on the menu - steak, fish, or chicken and steamed veggies, soup, shrimp cocktail. Nobody usually notices or looks at me strangely. If they did, so what? I eat what I want.
The hardest part for me is breakfast. I have trained myself to eat a hearty breakfast every day. Hotel breakfasts usually stink. If I'm lucky they will have an omelet bar. If not, there is usually nothing whole grain. One time all they had I could eat was apples, scrambled eggs, and skim milk. The milk was sour, and the eggs were powdered and crunchy! I learned that day to always make sure I had a protein bar on hand.
It takes some planning and commitment, but you can do it!
If you are eating at a chain a lot have decent calorie controlled options. On the Border has some like 400 calorie meals. Then of course there are the chips. Applebee's has items like that too I think that say how many weight watchers points they are.
Subway for lunch not the worst option.
Other than that definitely stock up on some snacks and keep them with you. Even before being on an eating plan when I traveled for work I would always bring something. I often went from Boston to San Fran. You get there after 6 hours on the plane and who knows what meals you've skipped and what you need right then.
When I was picking up snacks at Jewel in Chicago area I noticed that if I got the card I could save a lot of money. So I go sign up for the card. What do you get for signing up for the card? A bag of cookies. I brought them into the office / factory. Those kind of things don't last long. Which was a good thing.
I ordered this from amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/South-Beach-Di...2834106&sr=8-5
It has restaurant suggestions and allowed foods.
Also, when I travel, I take a ton of SBD friendly snacks to help keep me on plan (nuts, peanut butter in individual portions, fruit, etc.).
