Do you work out the night before a weigh in?

  • I was jsut curious if everyone worked out the day before your official weigh in day? I have heard some people say they don't, but I don't know why. Does it make a difference? And what difference does it make?
  • When I was competing in the local Biggest Losers contest (which I won twice, btw ) the only modification I'd do is not train my legs heavily - with strength training, NOT cardio like elliptical, bike or treadmill (those are cardio) the day before an official weigh in. I tend to gain around 1-2 pounds due to water retention the day after strength training my legs. Cardio never does anything to my weight short term, except maybe temporarily lower it due to dehydration immediately after.

Now that I'm not in a contest for cash, it doesn't matter, I'll train my legs any ol' day I want to. Scale fluctuations happen for no good reason, so I don't mind when they happen for a good one. In addition, everyday is weigh in day for me!

If you're not competing for cash - assuming this is your own personal weigh in - you're not benefiting AT ALL in the long run (or short term) by skipping a workout for a weigh in. It's just manipulating the scale, not your actual body weight. Doing the workouts, regardless of what day it is manipulates your actual body weight for the better long term, as you know. You are working out for positive results, not working out means less results.
  • I weigh almost every day, so, no, I don't skip workouts before a weighin. I am aware of the fact that 2 days after a heavy lifting day, the scale will spike a couple of pounds and if I weigh after a 7 mile run in July it will drop a few pounds.
  • I weigh pretty much every day, too, and have the same patterns as midwife. I just plan on seeing the scale go up after weight training, and it usually goes down a little after a run.
  • My weight goes up after a really long run or hard run too. I dont let weigh-ins screw with my workout schedule.
  • I prefer not to do weight training the day before I know I am going to weigh myself but sometimes it just works out that way. I don't keep a concrete schedule because I do my weight training mostly on the same days as my husband. Sometimes I have to adjust the days to accommodate his overtime schedule. I could just change my weigh in's but I've been doing them with a group of other ladies. After February, I'm not doing that anymore so I can just weigh whenever.
  • Sometimes I'm tempted to try things, but I have to draw the line somewhere - I just refuse to not do something that's good, something that's part of my plan, just to try to alter the scale on *one* particular day.
  • Oh, yeah, I don't skip anything just because I know I am going to weigh myself the next day. I don't know if I made that clear or not.
  • I've never skipped a workout knowing i weigh in on fridays...but luckily, my hardest class was always on wednesday...so any "water weight" i might be holding on to would usually always be gone by weigh in day anyways.
