TOM and Scale?

  • Just wondering . . .

For all of you who do a weekly weigh in, do you weigh yourself during your TOM? I know I did very well staying on plan last week, but the scale reflected a gain due to TOM and even though I knew why there was a gain, I was disapointed. A few days later, my true weight loss was reveiled.

So my question is, do you weigh yourself during your TOM or save the disapointment?
  • I weigh myself pretty much every day at home, but I take the number with a grain of salt - my "official" weigh in is on Monday nights at WW. That being said, I've never really noticed a weight gain around TOM. The WW scale has usually shown a slight gain 2 weeks after TOM is over, but it's gone the next week. So probably hormonal, but I'm luck that I don't see the 5-10 pound gains some others report. I wonder if it's a bonus from being a hormonal birth control.
  • I didn't know there were women out there who didn't gain at TOM! Im so jealous!
  • A lot of people don't weigh during TOM for the reasons you describe. I'd rather just know. Everyone's different.
  • I weigh during my TOM, but definitely not as much as I usually do. And if I start to gain a lot because I bloat real bad, I stop. I just can't stand watching it go up that much, and it makes me that much happier when I finally lose all the water weight. A lot of times I lose the water and then some!
  • I'm so glad I'm not the only person who struggles with this...I weigh too. I'm try to up the water intake to flush.
  • I weigh during TOM. Sometimes I gain a pound or two, and sometimes I don't. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I do get a little disappointed whenever I see a gain, but as long as I know I've been on plan, I try not to get too bent out of shape.

My weight can fluctuate by 3 pounds throughout the week anyway, but the overall trend is down, so that's okay.
  • I weigh myself every morning but I only record my weight on my weigh in day which is Thursday. I have had gains in the past during TOM but lately I have not. I drink way more water than I used to though so maybe I am just being flushed out???

I know what you mean though by being dissapointed when the scale goes up even when you have been on plan. If you find it is frustrating for you then I would just skip the weigh in that week and record the next one.
  • I've been wondering this too since my first weigh in would be monday and it is currently my TOM. I ALWAYS have a lot of water retention right around now, so I think I am going to wait a few days and record any loss next week.
  • I ALWAYS go up 2-3 lbs about 5 or 6 days before my period shows... then it drops back down the closer to my period it gets... then it holds steady while I have it and on the fourth day it WHOOSHES off and I lose like 4-6 lbs.
  • I lose about 2 weeks out of the month - during PMS and my period. The rest of the month is a crazy whirlwind roller coaster, particularly mid-cycle when I ovulate. So contrary.
  • I too only lose about two weeks a month but it's the two weeks after TOM. After that my weight usually fluctuates up and down 3-5 lbs until during TOM. I do still weight everyday (it's how I stay accountable). I just try not to obsess about it during the time right before TOM.
