Stalling already?

  • When did you hit a plateau in your weight loss. I started this on Oct 15th and since then have lost 12lbs. I have lost inches I just measured today. Last week i lost nothing and i did a Wi this morning and was down 2 ounces. Im hoping Friday brings better results. My question is should i be worried?

I eat between 1700-1800 calories per day
workout 4x always sometimes 5x per week 35- 40m on the Elliptical followed by total body weight lifting 2 sets of 12 total body.

Should I lower my calories? Work out longer? More days? I know everyone does this I just to have a game plan for how to handle this without getting discouraged.
  • I think a plateau is when you haven't lost for like six weeks. If I'm reading your post right it's only this week that you haven't seen a loss which would mean keep doing what your doing for another month-ish before you switch things up.

    Short answer ... no!

It's great that you had such a strong start, but don't let it set you up for false expectations. You are going to have weeks where you lose and are totally happy ... and then you're going to have weeks where you don't lose anything. The scale is so influenced by things other than just fat loss ... it could be retained water from sodium, it could be the barometric pressure, it could be you are ovulating or about to start your period.

The whole journey will have ups and downs. Learning to deal with them is part of the process.

  • I've had what seem like small plateaus several times a month since I started- often, the weight will come off the next week (or the week after that) more quickly. I've come to recognize them not as plateaus but as mathematical errors. Some days I weigh as much as 3-4 pounds more than the day before, so if you weigh yourself once a week (and choose the wrong day) you'll end up disappointed.

Now, I weigh myself every day and compare the average for the week to the average of the week before. This is a lot better way to get accurate measurements.
  • I bet by next weeks weigh in you will be down again...your body is just readjusting itself and your gaining lean muscle. Working out can also make your muscles retain water and that can show a no loss on the scale. I wouldnt be concerned at all..but if in a month you dont see any loses it wouldnt hurt lowering your calories just a little or switching some of your calories to negative calorie foods maybe , like more veggies andlean protiens

Oh thats a great idea!!! I want to weigh myself everyday but refrain but I have done it on occasion and noticed the huge swing in my weight. A weekly average would be agreat thing to do..

    thanks!
