Phase 1 snacks to the movies????

  • Hey all...Okay, sorry, guess I didn't mean that S.B. was a low carb diet. Just heard from a co-worker and thought it was. So, what do you take to the movies for a snack?

Guess I can stay with the string cheese, nuts...guess that's about it. Got any suggestions?

Wish there was some low carb candy!!!!

    Thanks!
  • Check out the recipe for roasted chick peas. They are great!
  • sugar free candy is ok to bring. I second Jenski's tip of roasted chick peas - they are very good and with a lot of different variations, it is hard to get sick of them.

There is a section in the book that has snack lists - you may want to become familiar with that.

Again, for emphasis, this isn't a low carb diet.
  • Taben, I'm sorry you're confused about South Beach. I can't stress highly enough that while you can't (in my opinion) do any plan effectively without reading the book first, you absolutely HAVE to read the South Beach book to do this plan effectively. Much of South Beach (especially the transition to a workable Phase 2) relies on your using the knowledge you gain (from reading the book) about how your body works to help you pick foods that work for your body.

There's nothing "low carb" about South Beach. You can eat 1,000,000g of carbs a day on SBD as long as they're GOOD carbs (from the "Foods to Enjoy" list) and you don't have cravings from them. You have to stop thinking about carbs if you want to do South Beach.

As for the movies, roasted chick peas is a good idea, as are string cheese and nuts. However, I found that it was also helpful to learn to watch a movie without any food involved. DH and I had dinner at Ruby Tuesday's (which is a great Phase 1-friendly restaurant) and then went to the movies. I was so full from my dinner that I didn't feel the need to eat. That said, the smell of the popcorn can be very enticing, so I find that sometimes it's just easier to watch movies at home.

You can bring some sugar-free gum with you for something to chew if you find that you need it.
  • I would pop some popcorn at home and sneak it in my purse along with some mixed nuts and raisins(if they are allowed on SB)...Have fun.
  • Popcorn isn't allowed on SB Phase 1, cuteazz.
  • neither are raisins... ;(

maybe some cut up veggies with peanut butter or some cheese "crackers" that you can find in the p1snacks recipe section
  • I still take a string cheese and small (portioned ) bag of salty mixed nuts with me. Plus, a bottle of water. Makes it so much easier to pass by the popcorn and candy if I know I already have a treat with me!
  • I hear you, amasam. I also find it easier to pass things up if I have food with me, some of the time.

But I have started to question the need to eat during a movie. I grew up in a family that was obsessed with food (big surprise there, eh? ) and we ALWAYS had popcorn at the movies--we were even warned to "save room" at lunch so we could have it. When I started going to movies with friends, I found that almost all of them (except the one or two who were overweight, like me) didn't eat anything. Who knew you could enjoy a movie just for the movie? I think I end up about 50/50 now. Sometimes I have popcorn, sometimes I have nothing. But I find that I enjoy the movie just as much, regardless.
  • I'm with Laurie on this. Pretty much the only time we have food at the movies is if we're there with DS - and then we pop popcorn at home and bring it. Him having food helps him stay occupied and in his seat.

DH and I both refuse to pay the exorbitant prices for popcorn and drinks.
  • Maybe instead of going cold turkey of having no snacks at the movies, maybe you could transition by just getting a drink at the movie, or sneak one in your purse. It would calm the craving...and keep ya hydrated!
