I have discovered kumquats!

  • So yesterday I had a kumquat for the first time. It's like a min orange except you eat the peel. The fruit is very sour but the peel is sweet.

I have heard of them before but never tried them. They are only 12 cals! I thought I would share!

    Does anyone eat them?
  • i have never heard of them, but they sound very exotic are they like persimons? although they're not really like an orange are they ^_^''

Um.. I don't know what a persimon is. lol They look like a baby orange but you can eat the peel. I don't know if they would be down under. It's almost like sucking on a piece of sweet/ sour candy.....
  • Yes...
Lucky! You're in Cali. They're out of season here.

I do have a tabletop kumquat plant, but I haven't put it outside to go dormant in about a year, so it doesn't produce any fruit.

However, to satiate my citrus fix, they had these 5lb crates of Spanish Clementines for $5.99, so I bought 3. As you can imagine i've been eating about 10 a day to ward off the illnesses of these snot-nosed kids i've been babysitting lately, and stuffing them with citrusy goodness too.
  • I tried one once and I don't remember liking it a whole lot. We were eating them in a park and throwing them at each other

I did like the citric-ness of it, though.

Here we go again - persimmons are weird. Kind of like.. a golden delicious apple (really watery and crisp) tht tastes a bit like an orange.
  • I love kumquats but I havn't had them since I was a kid. Oh how I miss the novelty of them. I had a persimmon the other day, they are good.
  • I love kumquats!! I used to eat them all the time when I lived in CA, but I never see them here in CO.
  • Ive had them before they ARE yummy!
  • I had forgotten all about them! We used to get them in our organic fruit bag that we bought every week. (Not so organic when your fruit is flown by airplane from the other side of the world, but I didn't understand that back then ). I should see if I can find them somewhere! I used to love kumquats. The sourer, the better. I eat grapefruit without sugar. I love sour.
  • I ate them all the time while growing up, since a neighbor had a kumquat tree in her yard (and a pomegranate tree, and another neighbor had a mulberry tree. Yummmmm!).

I haven't had them too often as an adult, though I still enjoy them. They're kind of like nature's sour candy!
