flex spending for membership?

  • My doctor filled out a letter of medical necessity for weight watchers and a gym becaue I'm officially obese. They've approved it so I guess I could join weight watchers if I want to and use my flex spending money.

So, my question is any one using their flex spending for weight watchers membership? How is that working for you? Do you submit for reimbursement monthly?

And I tried ww about 15 years ago and couldn't wrap my brain around it. Too much cooking and planning. I juist found it really confusing at that time.

  • i dunno i never heard of that... so if you got it be glad cuz youre very lucky
  • I'm not lucky enough to have a flex health spending account through my employer, unfortunately.

One thing I'd like to point out, though, is that while the program has changed dramatically in the last 15 years, cooking and planning are still a big part of it (and any other healthy eating plan, unless you sign up for a meal delivery service).
  • DH uses his flex spending account to pay for his gym membership. I don't get a flex spending membership, being self employed, but my accountant told me this year that I can write off my gym membership as a health expense. I'm hoping that's true. It's not a whole lot, but every little bit helps to ease that tax burden when you own your own business!

  • Ask your employer's benefit control person how this should be handled, then you'll know for sure what they expect.
  • Here's a good article (PDF):

  • I spoke with a rep at the FSAFEDS. She explained how to do everything. One thing I didn't count on was the form I had the doctor fill out didn't include a time period so it only covers 2008. I'll have to get another form for next year. She told me to have the doctor put "indefinate" so it doesn't have to renewed each year.
For the weight Watchers, I'll need to get a receipt each month, I spoke with the leader and she said they have started giving out monthly receipts for people with flexible health care spending accounts.

    Thanks all.
