Trying to lose weight, suffering from Polycystic Ovaries

  • Hi everyone,

    I'm a 26 year old woman, and i've been trying to lose weight for about the last 5 years. I suffer from polycystic ovaries syndrome. My husband and I have been trying for a baby for quite a while. The consultant told me I need to lose weight first. However it is a struggle, and even though I try to exercise, and eat healthily, I cant seem to lose much weight, sometimes just a few pounds.

    I'm about 15 stone.

    It's really getting me down, and I wondered whether anyone here can offer any advice or support?

    I am in the same boat as you. Have you had your sugar checked? My doc put me on a med call Metformin, and she said it will help my insulin and aid in weight loss. I am down 6 lbs in the past 2 weeks. Good luck to you!!

    Thank you for replying. I'm the same, my consultant put me on metaformin, but the medication had side effects, so I came off it. I'm due to see the consultant again in a few weeks, but I'm worried as I haven't lost the weight. I wish you well and hope all goes well for you.

    The thing I find is that no matter how much exercise i do, i just cant seem to lose anything.

    I also have PCOS and find losing weight a real struggle. My doctor advised me to:

    * eat six small meals a day rather than three big meals - I think this helped to regulate metabolism
    * take a vitamin B supplement (although this is probably not necessary if you get enough of this through your diet)
    * avoid heavlily processed foods and those with artificial colourings
    * avoid white bread and pasta, go for alternatives
    * cut down on sugary treats

    I have lost 60 pounds so far although I still have a way to go - but it really has helped. I have also been drinking tons of water which helps me feel full and less likely to turn to junk food!

  • Hi there! I have PCOS and I wanted to encourage you to not give up. I started dieting this past February and it seemed at first like I had to work really hard to get a loss of a pound or two. But then it seemed like after 3 or 4 months of consistent dieting (really healthy eating), something changed metabolically because it seems to be much easier to lose weight. I'm eating a fair amount of food too. Another thing to become aware of is what types of food are good for you, not just the amount of food. You might want to learn more about the glycemic index, and I also recommend the book, "Volumetrics". I am currently following the Weight Watchers core plan but that is due to be changed on Dec. 7th. It might be a good change, but if not I will probably quit and focus on healthy eating and use information from glycemic index diet books, volumetrics, and my old core plan materials. Good luck in having that baby! By the way, my husband and I were married for 5-6 years before we conceived our daughter, and I was over 300 pounds at the time which is almost 21 to 22 stone. My only problem was sleep apnea (which was undiagnosed through the pregnancy) and then I got preeclampsia towards the latter part of the 3rd trimester. Skinny woman have preeclampsia too though. It runs in my family on the maternal line. So perhaps you two will conceive anytime. Don't give up hope! Feed your body healthy food and enjoy your husband!
