Oh, those morning blood sugar highs

  • and what to do about them . . .

There are two major causes of those unexplained (i.e., not related to eating a whole chocolate cake at bedtime ) high fasting Blood Sugar readings in the morning . . . the DAWN PHENOMENON and the SOMOGYI (or rebound) EFFECT.

Here's a pretty good article that explains the differences in the causes and suggests ways to avoid each of them . . . http://www.dlife.com/dLife/do/ShowCo...nero_0106.html
  • Thanks Meowee! DM
  • OMG, as a "new" diabetic (diagnosed w/Type 2 10/08), this has been making me INSANE! My bedtime # is usually 85 to 100 (no food after 7:30 or so in fear of my continued "high" fasting #s), but my fasting is always over 115! Usually 120-130! To think, all I need is a snack!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Even my doc (clueless!) had no idea about this. I will print that article for her.
  • thanks!

i was given a glucometer by my doc 11/08 because my fasting blood sugar was 125 and A1g was 6.8. It puzzled me how i could have higher blood sugar when not eating.
i am experimenting to see what does what to my blood sugar levels. Today i had 112 at 4pm so i thought i'd wait a bit till my sugar went below 100 to eat.
Meanwhile i munched some celery---at 6:30 my sugar was 139!

Given that these things are relative, id like to know what is a good pattern of blood sugar rise and fall and how to track it. For example, a meal, eaten slowly over about a half hour--when should blood sugar rise and then how long should it take to peak and to go down. So lets say its 110 then 30 min later 130 then 1hr later 150--the peak--then 2 hrs later 140. This is fictional, but similar to some of my patterns. is that pattern good, bad, ok? if certain foods give certain patterns are those foods more desirable. Yes i know about the glycemic index--that some carbs are faster than others, but for an individual person's blood sugar pattern what are the desirable numbers and times?

the books and articles i have read just give a range like 110 to 140 to stay in--under 140 2 hrs after eating is desirable. But what about what happens in the 2 hrs?
  • Do you realize celery has carbs? It is probably considered a good carb but it still will raise your blood sugar. To keep yourself stable you need to eat protein.
  • since ww my blood sugar is great about 70 in the morning. My insulin is 5-1 carb counting. watching those caebs really does matter
  • I'm not really sure what the pattern of blood sugar highs are after eating. I do know that it is different for different foods (carbs from a muffin would make my blood glucose go up to a higher number and faster than carbs from a vegetable stir fry) and likely different for different people. I'm a firm believer in measuring your blood glucose as much as you can (I know I'm lucky that the cost of testing supplies is covered by our health insurance plan). By measuring at least 7 times a day for the first several months after my diagnosis, I learned how my body reacted to different foods, stress and exercise. I also learned that no matter what I do sometimes, my body will do its own thing.
