PCOS and Thyroid problems

  • Has anyone been diagnosed with PCOS and Thyroid problems? I was just recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and now my Dr suspects that I have PCOS. I was wondering what complications anyone has experienced with both of these problems combined?

I am SO glad I decided to check the forums for PCOS. I have been on a pity party for myself and really needed to read that I am not alone in this. It just seems too much to take in all at once.
  • Hi there! Thyroid problems combined with PCOS are not uncommon. I'm sorry you're having a hard time with this. Hopefully as you get a few things under control, it will help align some of the other issues. Just hang in there, and tackle what you can. We're here for you!
  • I was diagnosed with Grave's disease about 7 years ago (overactive thyroid) and had radioactive iodine treatment for it. I have been on synthroid 300mcg ever since, I was diagnosed with PCOS last august but my doc thinks I have had it for years. Before my thyroid treatment I think I had the fastest metabolism in the world, after it just stopped, is it possible to have negative metabolism? As sick as I was before my treatment there are days I wish they would have just left it alone, now all I seem to do is gain weight and can't get rid of it.
  • I'm so sorry to hear. I myself have pcos and I'm hypothyroid. I was diagnosed with the thyroid first and then when I finally got to a good endocrinologist it was then I was diagosed with the pcos after we finally discovered that after upping the thyroid meds and I wasn't losing weight that it was due to the pcos. I have been on metformin now for the pcos for a little over 3 months and it seems to be helping. I would definitely get a referral to a good endo so you can get all your levels checked and decide where to from there especially since with and endo it is there area of specialization and will know exactly what to do unlike a regular GP (general practitioner) who only has a broad overview of the endocrine system compared to an actual endo. Good luck with everything and I can definitely sympathize! Stay strong!!!
  • I was diagnosed with PCOS in the mid 1980s and then a little over 2 years ago I was told that I had had Hashimotos for a long time. They diagnosed that at the same time they diagnosed thyroid cancer so I no longer have a thyroid and don't miss it. For many years many drs have suspected thyroid problems but all tests came back normal. I don't know if any problems I had have been linked to having both problems, but I do know that metformin has saved my life, I've been on it for over 10 years and will never go off it.
  • I was diagnosed with PCOS about 7 yrs ago, and then Hashimoto's thyroiditis about 4 years ago and then had my thyroid removed and found out I had thyroid cancer after it was biopsied upon removal. I am a metabolic nightmare, and weightloss is difficult for me. I am entering the HMR program through the local hospital and it is a medically supervised program. I am doing the decision free diet and I am hopeful that I will finally experience some success this time. Good luck to you.
