Day off of exercising

  • is it just me .. or is it when you take that day off you lose weight the following day?
    I think that a resting day is MUCH needed for your muscles and body , what do you guys think?
  • I think it has something to do with the muscles retaining water as they repair themselves, so having that rest day would have a more noticeable drop on the scale as the water is expelled. In my uneducated opinion. sounds good though.

    I think rest days are vital for each muscle group but not necessarily for the whole body. As in, it's good to exercise every day as long as you're not doing the exact same thing over and over. Just think, back in the day when life was all about farming and other physical labour (or today's construction workers etc), there was no need to rest because our bodies are built to handle the workload.

    edit: but i certainly don't mind when the weekend roles around after I've been thoroughly consistent with my exercising all week. I tend to take 1 or 2 days off then.
  • I try to exercise everyday, even if it is only cycling or walking some days. I sleep much better when I have exercised and I also feel better overall. But it may help that I do lots of different things: running, swimming, 30 day shred, aquarobics, other "stand in a gym and follow the instructor"-things, cycling, walking...
  • I've been thinking about this lately, too. I'm about to start 30DS.. but 30 full days of exercise goes against the day off rule that "everyone" (I guess dr's?) recommends. So how does that work?

    I think the 30DS's intention is to keep you committed to the workout. I take some Saturdays and all Sunday's off now but I'm still doing the 30DS. I just pick up where I left off on Monday. Personally, I think our bodies need rest days.
  • personally i think we need rest day too. But, I just think of rest day as no weight training. If you do yoga or cardio, i personally think there's no need to take a rest day.
    Well, i do take day off of exercising not because i think i need rest day, but it's becuz I allow myself to slack 1-2 days of a week

    Doesn't really apply to average people. It's good advice, but it's taken out of context. That advice is intended for pro athletes and body builders during training to avoid injuries, etc.

    Unless you're doing high intensity training for 6+ hours a day, it doesn't really apply unless you are a true beginner just starting to workout. Once you're in moderately good shape the rest day is optional. It's more of a mental thing to keep you from burning out, it's not a physical thing.

    i think that still makes it very important though. Well at least for me half my problems when it comes to exercise are mental, the rest day keeps me keen, avoids burnout, and stops me from getting bored. Gives me a chance to recharge my batteries, arguing with myself about how i MUST exercise is tiring!
