Help! lol

  • The weekend is JUST about here ... I'm getting excited about starting my new ways of eating & educating myself on how to lose weight & keep it off. But, I'm also overwhelmed & nervous because the weekend got here fast. I'm ready ... just not prepared yet. That is why I'm overwhelmed - everything isn't organized yet.

My question is ... Is there a place for the low glycemic diet or whatever it is? I have PCOS/Insulin Resistance and it sounds like the better plan for me to follow. Also, is it safe to eat this way and feed my husband, whom is IN shape? I don't want to deprive him of anything.

On my way to browse the site for recipes/food ... and make my list. Pleae point me in the right direction if ya can. Hopefully I can stay within $60-70. Ugh, I'm so nervous.
  • Okay ... just ranting ... I'm a little frustrated now.

I start making my list & boom, I'm stuck. I don't have much down, my budget is $60-70, and it's just my husband & I. This should be a lot easier, ugh!

    So far I have:

    Breakfast:

1/2 cup skim milk, oatmeal (mixed w/ water), 1 yogurt.

    Lunch:

Salad with fat free ranch (check to see what they have) with cucumber, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes. Maybe some sliced chicken strips as well.

    Dinner:

1 night - veggie stir fry (Birdseye steamed fresh veggies + chicken)
2nd night - Baked chicken breast, steamed veggies, whole grain bread slice
3rd night - spaghetti using turkey, whole grain (or wheat?) pasta, plain tomato sauce I will season myself.

    For snacks:

Some oatmeal bar recipe I found on here, yogurt, fruit, and fat-free jello. I am CLUELESS and ready to cry and scared I can't do this
  • Breathe, sweetie! It'll all be ok. And you don't have to do everything at once and overwhelm yourself.

First of all, are you wanting to do a specific diet like Atkins or South Beach? Or are you just trying to limit carbs? Whatever you do, you need to make sure you get in enough calories - more than 1200 a day. Your husband can problem have even more calories.

Also what do you weigh now and how much are you trying to lose?

I know there are a lot of people here who can help you. I know it can be overwhelming at first, but baby-steps are ok. Don't stress ... this is easy once you figure it out.

  • Hey hon!

Thanks for the encouragement. I was getting overwhelmed earlier so I just closed out & stopped working on my list. I have tomorrow or Sunday afternoon to shop so I still have a little while to figure out my list. I have OCD with organization ("even" things and cleanliness as well) ... & I started feeling like maybe I can't do this. I'm on the other side of the spectrum - losing weight, when I was always trying to gain it. Plus, I have food aversions like no other so I'm pretty picky with my food choices, but do not want to deprive my husband. He's in good shape but could stand to eat healthier as well, and will eat whatever I cook.

*HUGE GULP* ... I weigh somewhere in the 230's, maybe a little less but I carry myself well. But, the #'s mean a lot to me! I've never revealed my weight at this weight so that is a huge step. Whew!! My first goal is 50lbs AT LEAST!

I'm not trying any specific plan, just something that will get the weight off & make me a healthier person for many reasons - to not deal with Infertility anymore (PCOS), to fit into clothes nicely, to feel better, etc. My husband doesn't eat pork & I don't eat pork, beef or fish.

I JUST joined this site & feel like I'm already whining. I just feel a little out of place because I'm having trouble getting started. I don't have a support system IRL, except my husband, but he's not trying to lose so it makes things hard. Please, all (whoever reads), just know that I'm here to genuinely change. I'm just having a difficult time! I'm sure it gets easier once ya get started ....
  • Hey Kris - there is a forum here for PCOS/Insulin Resistance Support. I think you are doing exactly the right things - researching. This stuff takes time to learn - don't beat yourself up for not getting it all on Day One.

    - there are tons of recipes here, surf around, we are a very supportive bunch.
  • Well if it helps any, I started out 10 lb higher than you are (and I'm only about an inch taller than you).

I think that you're doing the right thing in planning ... but taking it slowly as well. Don't worry about sounding whiny - really it's ok. You're making a HUGE change to your lifestyle here and it's going to take some time to get used to. Lord knows, everyone on here has whined at one time or another.

Something that I would suggest from the meals you posted above is to add some healthy fat back in there. You can probably stand to eat around 1800 calories a day at your current weight (I started out at between 1700 and 1800 calories a day and didn't lower them until I got to around 180 lbs). That means you can afford to add in some healthy olive oil, maybe some avocado (guacamole, if you like it that way), some nuts or flax seed, things like that.

Also, what are you planning on doing for exercise? Even some brisk walking will help.

Hopefully kaplods will chime in here. I believe her diet is pretty much low carb due to health reasons as well and she can give some really good advice on meal planning and other suggestions.
