Facts about the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR)

  • I just received my 1 year follow up for the NWCR. I had to fill out another survey about my eating habits (which doesn't really match how I eat so it's a real struggle to answer it). I also answered a survey about how I maintained my weight over the last year.

These facts were included, I thought they were pretty neat!

Facts about the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR)

    • 80% of the people in the registry are women, 20% are men
    • The average woman is 45 years of age and currently weighs 145 lbs. The average man is 49 years of age and currently weighs 190 lbs.
    • Registry members have lost an average of 66 lbs and kept it off for 5.5 years
    • These averages hide a lot of diversity:
o Weight losses range from 30 lbs to 300 lbs
o Duration of weight loss ranges from 1 year to 66 years
o Some people lost weight rapidly, while others lost the weight slowly – over as many as 14 years
    • 45% lost the weight on their own, 55% lost the weight with some type of program
    • 98% of registry participants report they modified their food intake in some way to lose weight
    • 94% increased their physical activity, the most frequent activity reported is walking
  • Thanks, Glory!

I received my first "survey" a couple of months ago and still need to submit it... hmmm...

I'm surprised at the number of people who lost weight with a program vs. on their own. I really thought the percentage of those who went at it on their own would be much higher.

That's funny, I was just having the opposite thought! I figured more people would be part of a program.
  • Thanks for the information. I can request my packet in January!
