Appetite suppressant??

  • I know there are no "miracle" pills. I'm simply looking for something to help curb my appetite that actually works. Any help????
  • I've never found the OTC appetite suppressants to work at all. I was on prescription amphetemines in high school and they worked, but had nasty side effects. About ten years ago, I tried Meridia, but quit it because of side effects.

changes to my birth control (like Seasonique) and low carb eating suppressed my hunger far, far better than any appetite suppressant ever did, even the prescription ones. On very low carb I'm not hungry, but I don't feel very well. Too many carbs, even "good" ones with lots of fiber can trigger portion control and hunger problems. I'm still trying to find the magic balance.
  • Yeah, they don't really work. Try drinking a lot of water, that tends to help a lot.
  • Fiber, fiber, fiber! That seems to be the key to getting that full feeling and having it last.
  • I just starting taking a pill called FORM - it contains microbeads that expand in your stomach to help you feel full. So far it seems to be working, although I haven't been taking it long enough to know if I'm actually going to lose weight from it. But I am definitely eating much less, and it keeps me feeling full for much longer after a meal than without it.

ETA: And it isn't full of caffeine like most other OTC appetite suppressors. I get really jittery even from a couple of Diet Cokes. LOL
  • I would have to agree with kaplods - you might have better success (not to mention saving some $$$) if you take a look at the foods you are eating and identify whether there are particular ones that are triggering cravings/binges. Those OTC thingys won't do a thing for eating that's triggered by your body chemistry - and, if you haven't learned how to recognize when you are actually full, artificial fullness won't stop you either.
  • I had this prob in the beginning, I was hungry ALL THE TIME! A combination of drinking water, all day long, and find foods that make you feel full help. I know there are certain things I can eat, that totally make me full, but are still healthy. Grilled chicken salad is a huge one! That's my basic, I'm starving meal, I eat when I am really hungry and it makes me feel full for a long period of time.
  • The only pills that help suppress my appetite are ones loaded with caffeine that also make me jittery, edgy, give me shaky hands, and make me feel vaguely sick to my stomach. I don't recommend them.

I have found that eating more protein and complex carbs helps keep me feeling full for longer and I don't get as hungry.

I also plan snacks and eat about every 2-ish hours, which helps with being hungry.

  • I used Hoodia from Sam's Club. It works for me.
Also, drink a ton of water.
  • Any appetite suppressants you buy are generally just full of fiber which you can get naturally. Eating lots of fibrous foods (veggies, beans, whole grains, etc) will help fill you up. You can also use fiber pills or something like metamucil, benefiber, etc.
