new city girl - looking for my self esteem back!

  • hi all!
This is my first time trying to lose weight with on-line support. This is actually my first time trying to lose weight in general. Right now I weight 240 lbs (I'm 5'4") Two years ago I weighed 140 lbs. I visited my doctor for the first time since high school recently. She took some tests and basically told me I would die of a heart attack at 40 if I didn't change my life!

I think what happened is that I got an job that a.) pays pretty well and b.) combines office work and field work c.) has long hours. I'm also just started a graduate program. before this, I worked in a warehouse and was in good shape. now, when I'm not sitting in front of a computer, I'm on the road eating fast food. Or my husband and I go out to eat in this great foodie city (NYC). We never seem to have time to have a healthy dinner at home together anymore.

The more (unhealthy) I eat, the worse I feel, and the worse I feel, the more I want to eat. I feel trapped in a vicious cycle. But since the wake up call from my doctor, I'm really going to take a shot at getting healthy, looking good and feeling good again.

What I worry about most is going to the gym for the first time (which I have free use of at school) and looking and feeling like a fat idiot that can barely walk half a mile without turning bright red and sweating! People aren't very nice to overweight people, especially undergrads on a college campus! If anyone has any tips on how to get started, and can empathize with my fears, please feel free to respond!

Thanks for this site and I hope to get to my goal by one year from now! Thanks,
    Nods

  • best of luck.
