Provera? (not weight related)

  • My doc is putting me on provera to make me ole body have a period.

    Has anyone else done this?

    How bad was it?

I haven't had a period in 8 years....and I heard the longer you've been without one, the harder it is on you.

    True?

    I'm a mite scared.
  • Been there done that!
It's not as bad as it sounds, really! I have a hard time with my periods, they come and don't go away, or go away and don't come back. Let me think a minute here.

The last time I was on Provera I hadn't had a period for almost 2 years. It was pretty awful, heavy and painful. My sister who is a nurse says it feels like having your insides ripped out, but it didn't to me. However, the reason he was inducing my period was to put me on birth control. This is when I first found out I had PCOS. I never had Provera after that, though I needed it.

The last episode of bleeding without end I had to have a D&C, he wanted to do a hysterectomy but I wouldn't let him. I had a very heavy period EVERY DAY from October to the following March. No hormone he put me on would make it stop. My hemoglobin got down to 6, he said I could have a stroke or go into shock. At that point, I was ready for him to do whatever he wanted to!

Now I am on a low-carb diet, and it is normal again. Comes when it's supposed to and leaves when it's supposed to! Thank goodness!

Now the scary part! You'll do fine, just keep some cramp reliever on hand and be sure to ask the doctor what to expect and when to call him if it turns out differently than he thinks it will. Don't be afraid to call him in the middle of the night, either! Hahahah, they just love that! Good luck to you.

    Freedom and light

I take Provera about every month to have a normal cycle. I went 2 to 3 yrs without one! The 1st time I took it, it was a very hard period. Think of it this way, the longer you wait, the more builds up in your Uterus, so there is more to get rid of. It may be painful and a extra long period. Then again everybody is different. Don't be afraid to take it, I would be scared of what might happen if you didnt take it. My doc says that no periods can lead to cancers and a lot of other problems. So I took the risk and took the medicine. It worked for me. Good luck! Do not be worried about it, it needs to happen. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

  • I take provera, and it is not bad. I have a hard time remembering to take it, lets face it who really wants that monthly mess?? I dont cramp, or even bleed heavily, and my doc says I only need to do it every other month. Good luck with it you will do fine!!
  • Thanks!
I've been taking it for about 6-7 days, and it's not toooo terrible. LOL...I have had cramps a bit, but only once have they been miserable.

Question- if you eat a lot of protein does that make your cramps worse? I had eaten a protein bar as a snack on Sunday and later that night I was hurting really badly. But then I go back to my mix of proteins and carbs and haven't had a problem. *shrug* I dunno.

    Thanks for all your help!
  • Provera and I used to be real close buddies. Though it was one friend I could live without, I had no choice. You know the story, TOM vanishes months on end, leaving you no choice.

That was about 18 months ago. My cycles became regular with the help of weightloss, Metformin and excercise.

They began to act up again after gaining a little weight back during my divorce. Sure the stress didn't help either. Back on metformin, back to exercising and back on losing weight. So far so good.
