I need a good brand of BOullion

  • I made Lentil soup over the weekend and its ok but it was vegetarian so it's kind of tasteless
I want to have it for dinner tonight since I made a huge pot do you guys know a good boullion brand or some way of making it have a taste?
    thanks
    Kier
  • Did you use veggie stock/broth? Soups made with plain water are super bland.

Also, make sure to saute all your veggies prior to adding them to soup. Salt and pepper the soup several times throughout the cooking process. Herbs are your friend! I especially like Herbs de provence and italian seasonings with lentils. Cumin is also really good with lentils.

I hate using boillion....to me it has a really fake flavor and far too much sodium.

I would much rather get my salt from a good kosher salt than a boullion cube.
  • Bullion is usually SO salty--canned broth is usually a better alternative.
  • I used water b/c that's what the recipe called for and I'd never made it before next time I'll adapt it a bit
I'll definitely use some cumin I LOVE it and add some broth DH can wait while it cooks down
  • If you do make soups often, take the remains from the veggies (tops and tails, peels, etc.) and put them in a bag in the freezer. When the bag gets full, throw it into a pot with some water and boil for a few hours. Strain the veggies out and package. I love having homemade veggie stock on hand - it keeps really well in the freezer.

That reminds me, I need to get to the butcher to find some chicken bones and carcasses.
  • I too love to use cumin in my lentils... I had a great lentil chili recipe... i will have to look for it for you!
I am not sure exactly but this may be it

1 (16 ounce) package dry lentils
    1can tomato paste
2 (14.5 ounce) can petite diced tomatoes
water to cover- unsure how much, maybe keep an eye and add more if needed?
3tbs chili powder(more or less to taste)
    1tbs cumin
    1/4tsp paprika
    1tsp ground red pepper
    salt
    pepper
some shredded carrots and finely chopped celery, green pepper and onion a couple garlic cloves minced

other veggies can be added if so desired. packed with flavor and I love it! I would adjust your recipe according to your personal preferences- I love spicy so you may need to tone it down or up a bit!~
  • I'll snag some tomatoes at the store and definitely throw in some cumin and chili powder!!
