Headache Help

  • Last evening I asked you guys about Da Vinci syrups and got the ok.

But let me tell you... since I have never had splenda before, or at least to my knowledge... and then having the syrups... you talk about a killer headache!!! :help:

So no more syrups for me.

Any ideas on how to sweeten the Greek yogurt in Phase One? I've heard about Xylitol and agave nectar...any thoughts?
  • What day are you on? Are you sure it was from the syrups? I was having killer headaches for a while a few days there in Phase 1. I think I rememebr someone saying that this could happen from being on phase 1.
  • I had headaches during phase I due to the sugar/HFCS withdrawal. It will get better, we promise
  • yep, p1 breaks addictions and that can definitely cause headaches... I wouldn't imagine it was from the syrups, I am not saying I know for sure but i would doubt especially that amount would affect you much- also, chances are if you have drank different diet sodas, sugar free stuff, or even just reduced calorie things you have eaten sucralose(splenda)...

Just hang back for a while, skip the syrups to be sure then after you lose the beginning"flu" try again... then you will know if it was in fact the syrups!

-I hope your head feels better now too!
  • Now that we are talking about it. I remember last week on Monday having a spiltting headache while in the car. It was killing me!! I ended up stopping for some Advil. That took the edge off, but after a few days the headaches went away completely. I had the "flu" last week. It was a rough few days, but it is gone now and I feel great! Hang in there.
  • it could be possible that you are just sensitive to artificial sweeteners.

I like agave nectar to sweeten my greek yogurt. There are mixed thoughts on whether or not agave nectar is ok for SBD, though. It has a very low glycemic level and doesn't cause me to crave or gain, so I use it - in moderation, of course!

Again, it might also just be a "withdrawal" symptom. Our bodies get so used to loads of refined sugars that a day or two without them can seem like an eternity. It's almost like heroin - but tastier. You can combat it with different things like adding more fiber (beans are a very good way to get loads of fiber) and dairy (milk does a body good). Make sure you're getting a 1/2 cup-1 cup of beans a day and the recommended 2 cups of dairy (milk and yogurt, not cheese - cheese is protein) daily.

It might take a little experimenting to see which of these two is causing your headaches. Try upping your intake of fiber and dairy and cutting out art. sweeteners. If the headaches go away, try having another dose of artificial sweetener..if the headache returns, you're probably just sensitive to sweeteners.
  • I'm pretty sure it has to do with the sweetner as this is Day 1 of week 2 of Phase 1 (starting over again). I felt great last week with no headaches. I started the syrups on Saturday and had headaches yesterday and today.

    I appreciate the suggestions.
  • you may be allergic to Sucralose (Splenda). Non nutritive sweeteners are in a lot of things, I'm surprised you haven't had problems with them before....although you may just be allergic to sucralose and not to aspartame or any of the others.
  • FYI - My headaches started on week of of phase 1 as well...
  • I don't sweeten mine at all. It's so rich -- reminds me of sour cream.

After totally giving up artificial sweetener I've found that I don't need much sugar to sweeten anything. I only use 1/2 tsp of sugar in an entire bowl of oatmeal and it tastes perfect to me. I used to use 2 packets of Splenda!
  • Splenda gives me headaches too.
  • I saw a new stevia based product in stores the other day, Sweet One....

No idea on the taste or anything, but would be interesting to try.
