Diet Coke

  • I have an addiction to Diet Coke. I drink it all day, every day. I've been on it so long and I'm so chunky that I don't know if it bloats me. : ) Does anyone else have this problem? Do you think it could hurt my weight loss? I've really cut out so much this last week, that I'm not ready to let go of my favorite drink, but maybe I should start thinking about it.

    Ideas? Opinions?

    Thanks
  • I read that the asprateame or however you spell it makes you more hungry over regular sugar. also, drinking a lot of soda can hurt your teeth and stomach...the acids are horrible.
i mean, if you put a steak in a bowl of coke, it'll eat the steak!
anyway, having one diet coke every once in a while isnt bad, but too much of something is never good!
  • Thanks for the disturbing info. : ) My grandpa always said you can more Cooke over a rusty car battery and it will eat the coke off! Didn't stop me.

I just the earlier post regarding this same topic, so sorry for the duplicate.
  • Yeah, it's not that diet pop is fattening at all, I actually believe it's zero points on WW. It's just that aspratame is not good for you. Every once in a while I indulge on pop, not always diet (mostly because I don't like diet pop). However, this weekend I drank a lot of diet Dr. Pepper. I'm always a little naughty on weekends. (that has to stop!).
Maybe limit yourself to ONE glass of diet pop a day or something.
  • I have in the past (erm, several times) lost tons of weight - 50, 60 pounds, while drinking ponds if not lakes of Diet Coke. I won't argue that it's HEALTHY but it doesn't inhibit my weight loss.

I now have a two year old who hears me order Diet Coke in the drive throughs all the time and she's starting to ask for it...sigh...so I'm trying to switch to green tea. I'm not yet ready to go all the way to water. I've found a decaf mandarine green tea that I really like iced, so that's what I'm MOSTLY drinking at home. I refuse to give up my breakfast Diet Coke. I'm just not there yet.
  • I think this is much more of a personal issue than an absolute. Some people have an adverse reaction to aspertame. Some people find that drinking anything artificially sweetened triggers cravings for more sweet food. Some people are not affected by it at all.

    There is no absolute here.

This myth has been busted many many many times. The action of the ingredients and the carbonation will tenderize steak, but it will not eat through it.

The thing about rust/corrosion on a car battery is also a scare tactic. You can do the same thing with baking soda, yet we eat that all the time.

If YOU feel that drinking Diet Coke is impeding your process, then I'd say yeah, try to give it up or cut back. But if it's not, then don't stress about it.

  • I just got back into counting last week, so I suppose if it gets in the way, I'll stop.

By the way, I have Diet Coke for breakfast too. Glad I'm not alone. : )

    Thanks everyone.

Yeah, I agree with Photochick here.

I personally drink diet sodas, have had them throughout my weight loss and do not think that they interfere with my weight loss. The health concerns people have with them are another story, but no - they haven't stopped or slowed my loss.
  • I LOVE my diet soda. I'm trying to reduce my consumption, and drink more water and tea. Maybe one day I'll even give it up, but for now, it's my one major "fake food" indulgence, so I don't sweat it much.

I look at my beverage choices, like the rest of my diet and fitness goals - progress, not perfection. I think I do lose a little bit faster without artificial sweeteners and/or diet soda, but the difference is so small, I'm not sure if I'm imagining it or not. And the difference isn't worth sacrificing the enjoyment I get from the diet soda - the trade-off, if there is one is worth it to me.
  • I drink Diet Coke on a regular (daily!!) basis I can even say I crave it at times. Yes it will eat the rust off batteries and even clean the toilet but not to the extent that pure stomach acid would and we carry that around with us all the time. I have drunk diet coke since I first started dieting some 18 years ago and have never had problems with losing weight whilst drinking it (in fact I often use it to fill me up before a meal)- it's the extra calories in the food I consume that cause me not to lose.

Ok It's not as healthy as water but when we are calorie counting do we eat everything healthy or just count the calories - I know that if I fancy Chocolate I will work it in to my calorie allowance even though it's predominately sugar and fat!!!!!

    :c arrot:
  • You might try going with the Splenda-sweetened cola products for awhile and see whether it makes any difference. The Atkins program, as one example, says that either Splenda or good old saccharine is preferable to aspartame. You may find that you don't like the taste of it as well, but a couple weeks should tell you whether there's any difference in your weight loss.

  • I believe you can anything in moderation, but if you basically only drink diet sodas you may want to consider backing off some and adding in some fresh water.

My husband drinks a ton of diet soda and I wish he would try to get some fresh water in, but c'est la vie.
  • My two cents is that at this point I am trying to LOSE weight, once I am at a healthier weight I will do more to add whole foods and less fake stuff. But right now, if diet pop gets me through then that's what matters. I think being overweight is harder on your health in the LONG run than a few diet cokes a day. I drink diet pepsi for breakfast, lunch and dinner and maybe some diet sprite in there. But I chug water the rest of the day. I have lost 27 pounds drinking diet soda, though the loss has slowed some it has all been while drinking diet soda.
