catbox concerns

  • My cat Emma is about 7 years old. Since we've had her she's never had any problem with her cat box at all. The few times she went outside the box were times when she was mad at us or the box had been neglected for too long.

Just within the last two weeks she has started pooping outside the box almost every single day. I cleaned the box and noticed that there was a lot more urine then there usually is in there. I cleaned it again today and noticed the same thing. I'm not sure if she's being ornery about something or if maybe there is a health concern somewhere.

    Any thoughts?
  • It sounds like she has a urinary tract infection. She is telling you something is wrong the only way she knows how. Take her to the vet! When my kitty would get a UTI, she would wait until I was going into the bathroom, follow me in, and pee in the sink! She also may need a lower carbohydrate, higher protein diet to keep the UTIs away. That means less dry food, and more wet. Good luck to you!
  • Gross Alert!
Have you really looked at the cat poo she's leaving you? One of our kitties would do that, and it turns out she had irritable bowel syndrome and worms. Her poo had lots of mucous in it, and some blood. We had to do a fecal test at the vet to determine what was wrong with her. Sometimes she just couldn't make it there in time! We've treated the worms, and switched her to a cat food with more fiber and less fillers. She's much better now.
DH and I joke about her having IBS and being overweight, because I am overweight and have IBS too. Fun times in our house, lol.
  • If there's alot more urine than usual, it could also be a sign of diabetes, or kidney issues, also. I think a checkup with the vet probably is the best idea.
