  • I'm thinking that I need to increase my protein. I tend to reach for nuts and cheese, but teh calories add up so quickly. I can think of:

    grilled chicken breast
    canned tuna
    canned beans
    egg whites

What are some of your favorites? Espec for on the go eating?
  • looking back at my fitday for some higher protein numbers and aside from tuna and chicken, some surprises are:

lentils (17 grams in 1 cup)
cottage cheese (23 grams in 3/4 cup)

I got 10 grams out of two little whole wheat tortillas.
  • Boca burger
  • Greek yogurt!! 1 cup of the Trader Joe's nonfat plain has 120 calories and 22 grams of protein! I add blueberries and a little high fiber cereal, and I've got a feast for under 200 calories.

    chicken breast and turkey breast

    lowfat cottage cheese
  • this is the second time I've heard of this greek yogurt. I need to check it out. I love nonfat plain yogurt.
  • Soy Boy baked tofu is 100 cals and 11g protein per serving. It's much firmer and more flavorful than regular tofu - you can just slice it and eat it or put it in a sandwich or on a salad.

I second the greek yogurt! That's what I usually have for dessert with flavored stevia and fresh berries.

Also, boiled eggs are portable and satisfying.
  • Another huge greek yogurt fan.
  • This might be a stupid question.... but can you just buy it at a store or is it a health store thing? Like Trader Joe's?

You mean Greek yogurt? I haven't found it at my local "regular" grocery store, which is Kroeger. However, They do have it at my local Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and at Sunflower Market, which are all "healthier" stores. I've seen the brand "Fage" yogurt a lot, and many of the ladies here mention that brand by name. I've never tried that brand, but stick to the Trader Joe's brand because it's cheaper. (And...let's face it, I'm a TJ's fanatic!) The other ladies can clue you in as to where they buy their Greek yogurt at...
  • what is the difference between greek yogurt and regular yogurt?
  • Greek yogurt is thcker and tang.

I also use Flatout bread, Thomas light English muffins, low-fat string cheese
    Laughing Cow cheese
    hummus
    MSF and Boca and Gardenburgers
    Tempeh
    Tofu
Grain mixes like quinoa with brown rice or lentils
    TLC protein bars (Kashi)
    Balance 100 cal snack bars
South Beach High protein cereal bars (snack size ones)
  • Octopus. It rocks!
  • eggs
    fish (not fatty fish)
seafood...like lobster (skip the melted butter)

I used to love boca burgers too but they are not available in Canada anymore. Whoever made them (Kraft?) decided to discontinue them in Canada. The onion flavoured ones were my fav.
  • I'm weird but I looove that fake crab meat! I even like it plain (or on salads) so I don't have to use up calories on sauces, which is nice.
  • I love fake crab meat! If I'm starving it's the first thing I reach for. I am so glad I'm not the only one. I always thought it was kind of weird too.
