Hi ladies,

I have quite a few of the symptoms of PCOS so I am thinking I should go talk to a doctor - but silly question. Do you just go to your normal doctor or your OB/GYN?

My regular doctor is the one I started with. Actually an OB I saw years ago tested me for but never diagnosed it properly - so she was zero help. But that was probably just bad luck.

I second that - I had a doctor at an urgent care clinic ask me what PCOS was a few years ago. I'm glad I wasn't there for anything 'urgent'.

Most doctors should know what they are doing these days, hopefully, but if you don't get anywhere, please go to another Dr and don't give up. They're out there.

I was diagnosed by my regular doctor, but that was after an OBGYN discovered cysts on my ovary with an ultrasound.

My family dr. NEVER said anything. It wasn't until I started seeing my OBGYN that i was diagnosed. And even then it didn't hit me that researching PCOS that I would be equipped for a better lifestyle..

I don't think it matters which doc you go to, as long as you go in knowing as much as you can about PCOS. I went to a reproductive endo that told me the benefits of metformin were in my head. Thankfully I knew enough to know he was nuts so I ignored him. If whatever doctor you go to doesn't give you the answers you want don't be afraid to move on.

If you have an HMO make sure you see an MD, and NOT a nurse practitioner!!! Not that NPs aren't qualified but in terms of such a misunderstood condition as PCOS, it is super important to find someone who's done their research. In my experience ob-gyns know more about the condition than do general physicians. I was misled for about 8 years because the usual person I saw for paps and birth control Rx's in the ob-gyn dept. was a NP who did not know how to read blood tests correctly for PCOS.

I first went to my OBGYN she then sent me to an endocrinologist.

My family doctor diagnosed me with PCOS only when my mom brought him an article in a magazine that had a story about a woman with PCOS. He researched and we ran some tests and lo-en-behold!
Though I'm glad to have found out what was wrong, I think the doctor may have made some wrong diagnosis'. He put me on birth control because I had not been getting my periods for 2 years, only to find out after i'd been taking them for 2 years that I was supposed to have a pap done before being prescribed...at this point I had NEVER had one done.
