  • I have some fantastic and unusual varieties of low-cal/low-sugar all natural bbq sauce, but of course I'm not going to eat meat with it. Other than tofu and seitan, what would you use it for? The only things that come to mind are baked beans and maybe grilled portabello mushrooms. As a vegetarian, have you done anything interesting with bbq sauce?
  • BBQ tempeh is great, otherwise I tend to just use it like ketchup, much tastier.
  • Hi Suzanne,

I'm not vegetarian, but I opened the thread because my husband is a BBQ sauce fanatic. I don't, but he put BBQ on all kinds of things, like bean burritos and boca burger wraps. Maybe you could try your BBQ sauce on something you wouldn't normally use it on and see how you like it.

BTW, is this homemade sauce? If so, would you mind sharing your recipe?

    Thanks!
  • Marinate veggies, add it to my rice cooker (with a variety of grains), drizzle over veggie bakes, add it to scrambled eggs or omelets.
  • You could use it as a base for soups and sauces...that smokey, sweet flavor would be a great add-on to a vegetarian chili, for example, or even to add a bit of extra zing to a stir fry sauce.

You can use it on grilled veggies too...always love that.
  • Not particularly healthy (or creative) but I put it with melted or grilled cheese.
  • Not overly creative either but I like it on roasted potatoes.
  • I make TVP and mix the BBQ sauce into it, along with a few spices, tomato paste, and a little mustard. Sloppy joes that my husband has no idea are vegetarian!
  • That's approximately what I had for dinner tonight, chickybird!

There's also a great faux-sloppy joe recipe from Veganomicon which doesn't call for BBQ sauce so doesn't really apply, but last time I made it I cut out some of the tomato sauce and replaced it with BBQ. Pretty much just lentils, onions, garlic, some tomato paste, and BBQ sauce... Yum!
  • OH, COOL! I didn't want to be the only weirdo who ate TVP sloppy joes, lol!
  • Quote: OH, COOL! I didn't want to be the only weirdo who ate TVP sloppy joes, lol!
I think people who don't eat TVP sloppy joes are weirdos

I prefer lentils but TVP isn't weird!
  • I rather enjoy it on "chickpea cutlets" It's like having wings...without the chicken. ha
  • Do you have a recipe for chickpea cutlets?
  • I want to second the tempeh suggestion. That's what we had last night, and we put it on a sandwich. Sometime I'll use like buffalo sauce with the tempeh too so it's like a chickenless boneless wing.

And speaking of tempeh, I also buy this pre-marinated fakin' bacon tempeh at whole foods and make BLTs and it is sooooo tasty.

As you can see, I really really love tempeh.
