I have the problem of buying salad fixings and before I use it all up in the week, it goes bad. Are there any tips that anybody has that could possibly help this problem. I came across some bags that are supposed to help stop that problem. I cannot remember the website now but if anybody knows what I'm talking about I would love to see some of y'all's opinions if anybody has some.

i dont know if you have a whole foods in your area but they sell "green" bags that are supposed to keep your produce for longer bits of time.

I don't buy bags. I put two folded bounty towels over the top of the produce. It absorbs the condensation and keeps it fresh. I remove the paper towel when it's wet.

and put another one. Sorry, I didn't put that. Basically I change it out every week. It lasts a long time. It works great for cilantro or green onions too. just wrap them in the paper towels and put them in a larger zip lock bag.

I never have any luck keeping the pre-cut salad mixes for more than 2-3 days, so I don't buy them. I buy the whole head of lettuce and keep it in a large glad storage container or a ziplock bag. Sometimes I'll put it in a big plastic bowl and cover it with paper towels like Here we go again. All seem to work equally well. The big secret is to wash it as you need it and if it's lettuce, tear a section off the head. Never, never cut it with a metal knife as this will cause "rusting" or discoloration and that leads to spoilage. I have a head of iceberg lettuce that has been in the frig for about 10 days and it's as fresh as when I bought it.

Those "green bags" are everywhere now, Target has them too. I haven't tried them yet so don't know how good they are. If I want greens, *I* just get some at the salad bar at the supermarket, that way I know I'm not getting more than I really want

Thanks so much chickies for the tips! I am so tired of throwing out veggies mostly that are rotted since I didn't eat them fast enough since I do like variety. I really do try to buy as little as possible but then when I do that I usually run out half way through the week and have no time to go back for a second trip to the grocery store.

My father taught me this a long time ago, he was a sous chef. With Iceberg, slam the end with the core down onto the counter, twist core and remove, divide in two, wash, dry well, and as mentioned above store in plastic with paper towel, always tear, never cut..
