considering WW flex

  • Hello flexers,

I have already lost almost 40 lbs. calorie counting. However, I have lost all motivation lately. I'm considering joining WW to get some structure and accountability because I can't seem to provide it for myself at this time.

Also, my activity level is WAY down this month due to an injury (which is one of the reasons my motivation is flagging). I'm thinking perhaps an activity point system would help me manage my fluctuating activity levels until I'm healed.

Here's why I'm on the fence though: I've come a long way on my own. I have a lot of knowledge and experience, I know a lot about calorie needs and nutrition and volumetrics-style strategies to feel full. And although I'm grounded now, I'm already very active and I don't need encouragement in that department. In fact I'm pretty depressed about my temporarily decreased activity.

Anyway, do you think it's worth it for the reasons above? Or do you think it would feel like an unnecessary 'back to basics'?

    TIA!
  • I think WW can only do good things for you.

If you are considering joining meetings, they would be a great source of motivation for you. I take a lot of strength from my meetings each week. Everyone there is in the same place you are, facing the ups and downs of weight loss, and persevering with varying degrees of success. It's just good to get some human interaction on that front.

WW certainly wouldn't push anything counter-intuitive on you, nor would the program force you to relearn all the basics of healthy eating. I knew plenty about healthy eating before I re-joined WW this year, but I still needed the program as a guide and a source of accountability (because let's face it, you can lie on a message board but you can't lie to the lady reading the scales).

Some of the meetings are about encouraging people to move. Most of them, however, are about encouraging people to eat healthy and to really explore the reasons behind poor eating habits. To find and weed out the negative thinking that leads you to the bottom of a bag of chips. To find sources of inspiration and motivation within yourself. A lot of what goes on at least at my meeting is about the mental side of all this.

Congratulations on all of your successes so far! (Another reason to go to meetings: be an inspiration to others!!) Whether you decide to join WW or not, you are doing fantastic and things will pull together somehow.
  • Hello! Weight Watchers is terrific. And you might be pleasantly surprised to know that a lot of the recipes in the Volumetrics book are low in points. I got that book and checked it out sometime in my quest for the "just right" plan for me. It looked very sound, but also looked like a lot of work and a lot of ingredients (translated into a lot of $$ for me). So I never started it.

BUT, after I started WW, I went to other cookbooks/weight loss plan books I have and calculated the points for the recipes. I was kind of surprised with some of them...some came out higher than I expected, some lower.

Anyway! Just saying you could very well fit a lot of the Volumetrics ideas into your WW plan. WW even addresses the same point in their Core program (I'm picturing the bowl of grapes vs. the bowl of raisins). There are so many great things about WW. I might go back & edit later to add more. But it's late here and I should force myself off the computer :P.

Good luck deciding what to do!
