Can anyone help???

  • So, I found this site yesterday and was inspired to start exercising again. I freely need to lose 60 more pounds. My problem is that when I go for a 30 minute walk my BS goes so low (40 - 50), right now its 46, that I feel like I'm going to faint.
Fasting BS this morning was 108. I had breakfast, 1/2 c. Kashi goLean cereal with 1 med. banana and 1/2 c. soy milk. 2 cups of coffee w/ coffee mate.
Now the rest of my day I'll feel tired and cranky.
I know everyone is different but how do you balance exercise and lows? How many carbs and what kind should I eat before walking. I'm afraid I'll go too low one day and be in real trouble.
PS I apologize if this doesn't make much sense its taken me 20 minutes to type this due to low bs.
Thanks for any help you can give.
    D.
  • Maybe you should add some more protein to your bfast. I don't know how much protein is in soy milk, but for me, I do better if i eat a breakfast that has equal protein and carbs ( or pretty close to equal). good luck, i hope y ou find what works for you soon.

  • Always carry Glucose or Dextrose tablets with you on your walk and as soon as you feel yourself going low, chew a couple and follow up with a balanced carb/protein snack as soon as possible when you get home. Yogurt is good.

Never let yourself remain in the low numbers like that for too long. It can be dangerous.

BTW, how soon after breakfast did you go for your walk because it sounds like you could use a snack before you go. Be sure to check your BGL numbers before exercising just to be sure.

Unfortunately I never "feel" low until I stop and sit for 5 or 10 minutes. I did eat peanut butter and SF jam when I got home to bring levels back up.

1/2 hour after I ate I started on the walk thinking that since I had just eaten BS would be OK.

Thanks for your advice. Today I'll try a few more carbs and protein before going out. If it doesn't work I'll have to exercise after lunch instead. I just don't like the heat. Whine Whine Whine...LOL
  • Dextrose tablets go straight into your blood system so even when you sit down for 5-10 mins you should take them then. Then when you get home eat some carbs.

You need something with real sugar like regular jam with toast and PB or a glass of juice (or those tabs) to bring it up fairly quickly and then eat the higher protein stuff to help sustain the better level.
  • what kind of meds are you on, since you are working out, your blood sugar will drop, have you contacted your md and informed him or her, may your meds need to be adjusted
