Question On portion size!

  • I have been wondering about something and Nancy's post proded me to post it finally. I am worried about protion size. I am not sure how to ask so will do some more explaining.
When I first started all of this and the first few months post surgery I measured, weight and counted anything and everything that went into my body. With taveling every week I stopped and mentally just track water/fluids and protien each day. I guess I think about when I first started eating regular food and could only eat 1/4 cup and was stuffed. So the other day I had a large chilli from Wendy's and ate about 3/4 of it with 6 craker and that night I had the Mandrian Chicken salad and ate almost all of it. I do not push it and stop when I am full. But should I be able to eat that much and am I dooming myself to long term failure? I do not want to go through all of this to mess it up, does any of this make sense? Like Nancy said she only can eat 1/2 a Detour Bar. I usually eat a whole one (90% of the time)???

    What are you thoughts ladies?!?
  • portion size
That is one of the big detour bars. They come in two sizes. If I was trying to use one as a replacement meal I would probably be able to eat the whole one, but mine are usually for the in between meal times. My Nut said, "You might be able eat more, but try to limit your helpings to 1/2 to 3/4 c. at a time." And since I eat more frequently, I probably only eat about 1/2c., but if I go 5 to 6 hrs. it is probably closer to 3/4c. Haven't you noticed that some day you can eat more and other days hardly a thing? She talked about calories, but said that there were different calories for different stages. I think she mentioned about 1000 calories a day for my 8 mos stage. As someone who is 2 years out will be able to maintain on 1600 to 1800 calories. Some day I probably make it, but don't most days. I also forgot to mention that they now have a chewable iron that is passion fruit flavored; didn't catch the name. An iron suppliment called Repliva, by Rx only, and it is set up like birth control pills. You take the iron for 21 days and a 7 day placebo. They have increased their recommendation for Vit D. from 400 to 800 per day. They also have started a clothing exchange at the Groveport one. Take stuff in and bring stuff out and it is free. I went to the Barix website and they said that you need to consult you NUT for a personal calorie count. They talked about the reasons that people regain weight: 1. They drank with their meals and the foods slide through the stoma easier. 2. People forget to take the protein first and carbs creep into their diet. 3. They take in more calories than they use.
  • I worried about the same thing...There ARE some days I can eat more then others but I just look at the over all weight loss I've had and chalk it up to how my body works.

My NUT told me that the first 3 months I am supposed to eat 500-800 cals...But I counted my intake and I was eating around 1000. I'm still eating around that, but proteins, proteins, proteins! I find that if I eat certain refined carbs I crave more and more. Veggies and fruit are good carbs for me as long as I eat low glycemic fruits.

I try to look at it this way...I am NOT eating what I WAS eating, I am exercising regularly and I am losing quickly. The details tend to take care of themselves if I don't stress about them...just do what I'm told. Not always easy for me but important.

  • So true, somedays I cAn eat more than others. I make sure protein is first when every I eat. The big thing that makes me not worry too much is that I am exersicing regular and still losing. Of course I am NOT eating at all like I use too or the things I use too!!!!
