How many carbs

  • Just trying to get a feel for the range of carb counts.

The book Insulin Resistance talks about carb balancing,
30 carbs per 14 protein and never over 30 carbs per
meal or snack. But they don't count dairy as carbs.
As a type two I've always counted dairy. Right now I
figure I am between 100 and 130 carbs a day.

    What do others strive for?
  • I'm Type II as well and am usually in the same range as you. I count the carbs in dairy.
  • I count all carbs. Must admit my carb intake is usually a bit higher than either of you are reporting . . . but most of it (almost all) is from huge servings of vegetables, some fruit, quite a bit of yogurt and maybe two to three servings of whole grains a day.
  • Most of mine are from dairy as I use yogurt in the morning
as a protein and cottage cheese for lunch (non fat or low
fat) I use milk as a snack mid morning and mid afternoon as
I teach and sipping a decaf latte is a good way not to crash
and I don't have to eat in front of the kids. Veg or fruit usually
as an evening carb but sometimes a half cup whole grain noodles
or brown rice. Evening it is whole grain toast with peanut butter
and sugarless jam - only way I can get some decent sleep and
one nutritionist told me that without a bedtime snack the liver
would make insulin and toss it out there.
  • The liver doesn't make insulin nor does it toss it around.

I do agree about the bedtime snack to avoid having your BGL drop too low in the middle of the night -- that will cause the liver to toss out stored glucose to raise your BGL to a safe level. Unfortunately the liver usually goes overboard and puts out too much glucose resulting in a morning high. Happens to me all the time.

Sorry, just passing on what my nutritionist told me.
  • I've been doing less than 20g net carbs per day, ZERO grain and sugar. I've been eating lean protein and lots of veggies, and even avoiding fruit for now, until I get down lower. I've been losing 1 pound per day. I've lost 10lbs since June 1. If I don't eat carbs then my body has no choice but to burn my fat. It's incredible.

Considering that PCOS women store 3/4 of carb calories they consume, instead of burning 3/4 of those calories like a normal woman, eating those healthy carbs a few times a day, like a normal person, will keep us from losing weight. Once you shut off the storing mechanism our bodies have no choice but to turn to the fat reserves!
  • 20 carbs? wow.. I don't know if i could ever consistently stay that low. I feel comfortable and satisfied going as low as 90 a day.. I could not handle 20 through for more then a few days. Is that the only way we can lose the weight??
