trying to lose after hysterectomy

  • I had an abdominal hysterectomy April 3, and am just itching to start working out again. I have to start out again VERY SLOW. Just like a beginner. I am just frustrated. I dealt with alot of pain prior to surgery so I couldn't work out like a I was last year. I have went for about 3 months now with out working out. I gained back some weight that I lost last summer and it is driving me nuts. I can't wait to start my routine again.

It doesn't make me feel any better that my tummy is really swollen and makes everything look even fatter.

Anyone else dealing with working out after this surgery or has anyone dealt with it in the past?
  • I had an abdominal hysterectomy last June. It is painful and emotional and tiring, but it will pass. You may not be able to work out right now but you can still control your diet. Also remeber that your weight gain may not all be from lack of exercise. Your body just went through a major surgery and it will need time to adjust to the loss of an organ. You may have weight fluctuations, especially if they took your ovaries. Rest, heal, and recover. You'll be back on your feet in no time.
  • I had a hyst about 6 years ago and I remember the incisional area being very puffy and my lower abdomen sticking out more for months afterwards. I remember crying when I looked at my profile in the mirror. I, too, had lost weight prior to surgery and I wondered if my stomach would stay that way. I was discouraged. But gradually my lower abdomen returned to normal. You can start out by doing easy things like going for walks, but don't do anything more strenuous without your doctor's OK. I was off work for 6 weeks and then got an OK from my doctor to return to all activities as normal. My uterus was quite large from fibroids before surgery (the size of a 4 month pregnancy) so I thought I would lose some weight and be very flat afterwards. LOL! Remember to eat plenty of protein to help your body heal.
