Count Calories Before Surgery?

  • Hey! I've got a question for ya.

In the beginning of June, I'm going to be having some surgery (non-weight-related). For the day before surgery, day of, and the day or two afterward, I'm going to be on a clear liquid diet (oh, the fun... especially since I have to drink a whole bottle of that Fleet stuff! ) I can drink/eat water, clear broths (chicken, beef, vegetable), juice, tea/coffee, (diet)sodas/Crystal Lite/KoolAid, ice (um...yum?) and (SF)Jello.

So, the question is: For those 3 or 4 days, should I worry about calories? My surgery will be done in my abdomen, so exercising is not really an option. Any opinions would be great!
  • I think you could ask your doctor that question. Or even the nurse in his/her office can let you know.
  • The important thing is to stick to the clear diet. I would not worry about calories at all. Your health is more important.
After surgery, focus on getting proper nutrition rather than calories. Lots of protein and Vitamin C is important for healing. (I actually lost weight after my recent surgery.)
  • Thanks for the advice ladies!
