New Book on Insulin Control

The book is The CR Way (CR, as in, Calorie Restriction). I know some of us on here were discussing this past week about PCOS women needing to restrict calories more than normal dieters (quoted from The Patient's Guide to PCOS), possibly down to numbers as low as 1000-1200, just to acheive steady weight loss. I've been incorporating the principles of Calorie Restriction (CR) into my diet, since it preaches eating less calories but more nutrients, thus eliminating malnutrition, and promoting superior nutrition.

I read the first book The Longevity Diet which first mapped out CR. But now they have this second book mentioned above that just came out April 1, and it's heavily concerned with insulin resistence and pre-diabetes... everything us PCOS gals are going through.

Just thought I'd give a shout out about the book. I'm going to pick it up today or tomorrow and let you know how it is. I'm pretty excited- anything that is specifically catered toward our condition is always helpful!
  • I thought there was something a little odd about the videos on the amazon page. I realized that when they show the food they are eating, there is absolutely no meat or dairy in there. It looks like mostly fruit and vegetables, with a little brown rice and maybe some nuts? I don't think I would be able to eat that way for very long. It makes me wonder if the diet is balanced and if you get all your nutrients (calcium? vitamin d?) and also, what about protein. One danger in going on a restricting diet is that you can experience muscle wasting. I heard that it is a good idea to eat lean protein with every meal, to prevent muscle wasting.

I like the volumetrics diet better because it addressed our need to be satisfied by our meals, while losing weight. I have been losing consistently on the WW core diet, and I recently heard that the core plan was designed based on the volumetrics plan. I wanted to give the link to amazon but the forum wont' let me because I have not made 25 posts yet. The book is called "Volumetrics: Feel Full on Fewer Calories" by Barbara J. Rolls.
  • Hmm, I didn't see the videos on the site. I read the book and it's very good. They do include the option of some animal proteins, but it's really not a strict 'diet'. It's basically eating the least amount of calories and counting nutrients. It's very scientific in some parts. Like, I'm not gonna take my blood sugar and temperature every day like they recommend.

But everything else is good advice. Getting protein from animals though, is a myth basically. You get a tiny bit of absorbable protein, but the rest is wasted. The proteins in veggies and whole grains are much more efficient for our bodies. Animal products are not necessary for humans. I eat a small amount, but am mostly vegan. I eat a small amount b/c I like the taste, but eventually I'm just gonna quit animal products altogether. I don't want to get osteoporosis. Yup, eating dairy causes osteo. The biggest scam of our lives. The more dairy we consume the larger calcium deficiency we have. Calcium from legumes, grains, and produce is not flushed from our bodies like dairy calcium. Why is the risk of osteo so great in this country? It's b/c we can consume all the animal products we want. Vegans hardly have any bone problems. Besides, who wants to drink liquid blood and pus? I can't even touch liquid milk anymore... ick.
