overrestricting calories with diabetes

  • i have diabetes. sometimes i feel like i may not take in enough calories, 1000-1200 a day. my blood sugar readings have been great lately, but i do take medication and sometimes my blood sugar bottoms out. how dangerous is that? i start feeling the effects of low blood sugar around 85. i know some diabetics that don't start feeling the effect till in the lower 70s or higher 60s. is it normal to start feeling shakey in the mid to lower 80s? i have never asked my doctor about it because i never thought about it while i was at an appointment. it does not happen that often and usually is easily remedied. however; sometimes it takes a long time to bring it up. are there any good combos of foods that will help stabilize blood sugars for longer periods of time?
  • Tough question . . . everybody is different. Feeling Hypo symptoms is not good at any number. You really need to talk to you doctor about it, though; at the 85 range there might be another cause.

What meds are you on? Generally, glyburide (and similar) and Actos/Avandia and, of course, injected insulin can cause hypoglycemia. Metformin (glucophage) does not.
  • From what my doctor told me, if you are used to high sugars, you will feel like your sugar is low at relatively high numbers. As you become accustomed to the low numbers, you should feel better. 80s is usually not a number to panic at. My understanding is anything under 70 you should correct for. Otherwise no. And yeah knowing which meds you take, might also help in deciding.

The calories do seem low in general for weight loss.
