Portion Control.. This was a wake up call for me

  • I thought this link was great... I needed to be reminded of portion sizes. After looking at it I really need to break out the food scale and other measuring tools. It a little slide show

  • Yep! I wouldn't be without my tools! Measuring cups, measuring spoons, and a scale. And once you get used to what the proper portion of a food looks like, it's easier to estimate in a restaurant also!

  • Cheese is one of my big 'watch it' foods. I found two different bagged blends with slightly lower fat contents than the regular block cheese we buy. It's almost impossible to cut an ounce, or even half on ounce (what I use on a wrap). When I measure out the grated cheese onto the scale I can put back what I don't need. Once it's cut, you just know I'm going to eat it.
  • It's a real shocker isn't it? I can't believe what I used to think a proper dinner-sized portion of pasta was. Truly comical! I bought a bunch of sets of cup, spoons, and a food scale. I measure and weigh everything, becasue otherwise I'd give myself way too much of everything!
  • That is quite an interesting website. I ordered their book from the library. Not that I need to read another diet book, but ya never know what might be useful....
  • No way could I portion control, I'd be starving LOL Breakfast for me is 4 jumbo eggs and 5 strips of bacon.
  • I subscribe to many magazines, & a few years ago, SELF had a "cut-out" portion control goody. They were those cut-out things like paper dolls clothes...remember those?... anyway, I had a deck of cards (for meat) a half baseball, a couple of dominoes, a stamp (pat of butter!) and couple of other ones (can't remember them all now... figures!) I had them laminated, & I carried them with me EVERYWHERE. Pretty soon, it was embedded in my brain what a "serving size" really is. It did help me with portion control. Maybe it's time to return to that!

After reading that link, I think maybe I should find those cut-outs!
  • Check out this "portion distortion" interactive quiz!

  • the cut out things sound cool! it would be cool to be able to finds oemthing like that !
  • Thanks for the link, but I don't buy some of their answers.
For example, it states the following:

If you walk leisurely for 1 hour and 10 minutes, you will burn approximately 400 calories.*

That is not true. You burn a LOT less by walking. If you burned 400 calories, I would be a stick person by now.
  • Yeah, it's more like 150 cals or less.
