3FC vs USDA calories?

  • I'm a bit confused. I count calories the old fashion way (paper & pen) but use the computer to check calorie content. I have noticed that there is a difference between this website and the USDA website. Mainly in meats. For example I just looked up ham, boneless, lean on 3FC it is 207 but on USDA it is 141. ???? I think that both are realiable site so which one should I use?
  • I go by the package if possible. I have noticed alot of difference in websites and packages. I just try to find a portion size that works with how much I know i ate.
  • Are they both the same serving size? I find that USDA serving sizes are unrealistic.
  • Both are for 3 oz.
  • Our data uses the USDA database, though it's over 1 year old. Maybe it's been updated? Also, they have so many versions of the same thing that it's confusing.
  • I looked at the USDA database for "ham" and there are literally dozens of entries. I think it's very hard to be sure that you're comparing apples to apples (or boneless ham to boneless ham!) due to all the variations. I'd pick whatever sounds like the best description of what you're eating and go with that, knowing that calorie counting will never be an exact science.

BTW, did you know that Fitday also uses the USDA database?
  • Thank you - It does get confusing - I am constantly asking my husband if he know the cut or how lean, etc (he's a grocery guy).

I've been kind of hesitant to sign up for Fitday. I'm not sure why - I guess it just seems like more work. I'm a snacker and having to pull out my pen & paper seems to slow me down.

Thanks for your help. This website is wonderful.
