Insulin high enough for Metformin?

  • Hello. I was wondering what the normal IR level is for prescribing Metformin. Do any of you know what your insulin level was when you got Metformin?

I recently had my fasting insulin tested. It was 35 uIU/mL (micro international units per milliliter) in a reference range of less than 17. My fasting glucose was 86 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) in a reference range of 65 to 99.

I have an appointment with the endocrinologist in a few weeks, but he is out of town now and I can't ask him... How unusual is 35 uIU/mL? Is my doctor likely to prescribe Metformin with this level of insulin resistance? Do you guys remember what your insulin was when you were prescribed Metformin?

I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!
  • I don't remember much about the ref ranges but I do remember mine was 55 and I was given metformin and to this day I don't know how high 55 is.
    So not much help sorry.

No that's good to know. I'm really just curious what most PCOS women test as, so I appreciate all responses. Thanks!
  • I just got my insulin results back and my level was 51 uIU/mL. My doc told me it was the highest she'd ever seen in a patient, the previous winner being at 47. She immediately prescribed metformin and a strict lo-carb diet.

So i guess at 35 you're high, but not as high as myself or Carrie.
