Smart Board...

  • Any teachers/others that would like to share how they use their smart board? I just got one - I am having fun with it but would like to maximize its use, yaknow?

    Thanks!
  • We use them for math lessons (interactive with the software), web lessons, Unitedstreaming lessons, Powerpoint, and teacher/student presentations demos, tons of things.

Have you checked out the Smartboard website? They have tons of lesson plans aligned to state standards already created.
  • Our bosses use them to bore us each day with notices, stats, and weekly goals.

I mostly sit through the presentations with glazed eyes, and the supervisor sounds like the adults in "Charlie Brown" to me: wawh wawh wawh waaawh wawh wawh wawh waaawh.
  • So, is that what I sound like to my students?! How funny, I think for some students that is probably true...

Thanks for the tip, countingdown, I will check out the website. I am pretty much going into this blind.
  • Oh I just love those smartboards. I'm in my third year of college and was doing some observations in a middle school math class...the kids had fun telling the teacher which pen to use and watching her write! Technology is fantastic in the classroom!
  • Tonia, I'm a SMART Board trainer. If you have any questions at all let me know. I'll be more than happy to help you out.
  • Thanks, Shantroy!

So far I love it! I am the first in my school to get one so I kind of feel under a microscope...like I need to really perform, ya know. I have spent the break trying to create interactive lessons that - I hope - the kids will enjoy.

I don't have any questions as of right now but when I do I will certainly ask! Thanks again!
  • We had a Smart Board in our area when I worked at SAIT... but never had the opportunity to see one in use Ahh well Sounds pretty cool!
  • Tonia, I would recommed using the free lessons that smart already has on their website. It's a great place to start and get a feel for what can be done. Check out www.education.smarttech.com

Also try googling smart board lesson plans. I always tell me teachers to check those out first b/c there's not point in recreating the wheel. Also if you already have material that you've been using, say on a computer with a projector, keep using that.

Hope you have fun with it.
  • I think the SMART boards are great, only problem is in our small town the teachers barely know how to use the computer so the 12 boards they have go virtually unused! A sad sad thing! I honestly wish one of the teachers will retire so I can get hired on full time!
  • I want a smart board!

Tonia - what do you teach? I teach high school English (we don't have any yet) but I've heard they're awesome for so many different things. Have fun with it!

Apple - just curious - what kind of work do you do? I HOPE I don't sound like that to my students, but I'm sure I do sometimes.

Shantroy - sounds like you have cool job too... I could see our school getting them in a few years, but probably just for math
  • Oh, I would love a smartboard, but they're just unaffordable for my school. I teach science and history both, and I'm quite computer literate, but it's just not in the realm of possibility for us.
  • I teach math at an urban (poor) middle school. Claire..don't give up just yet - there are plenty of grants available - we are currently trying to write one for Senteos...I really want the Senteos now!

Shantroy, I had never considered googling smart board lessons so I will do that today and see what I come up with. I do have a question, though...I have seen a presenter use a "hide-box" of sorts and when the presenter moved the box it simply dissapeared (rather than move to a different spot). How do I use those boxes? Thanks again!
  • smart board
    HI
I use it for every subject - but to start off I also go on thinkfinity and put in search the topic and tech use - many ways to use smart board are already online to use - it's been great - I also use it for mini clips with unitedstreaming
