Sleep and Weight Loss

  • Hello, all! I'm a young 59 grandmother/career woman/wife/traveler/blah, blah blah and at my recent annual physical my doc referred me to a sleep study place b/c my only concern - besides not losing weight even when I am really rigid w/my food intake - is that I'm always tired and wake up a few times, that I'm aware of, each night. She suspects sleep apnea and explained that once I was sleeping 7-8 hours a night instead of 5 or 6 I'll probably begin to loose some weight. I had my sleep study and indeed I do have mild apnea and am now scheduled to go back for another fun night at the clinic when I'll be fitted for an apparatus that will help me breathe better and sleep through the night. My question is to anyone who has been through this process......can you explain the correlation between sleep and weight loss AND does it work, i.e., does sleeping longer each night facilitate weight loss? Thanks, all, for any input you can offer. I'm delighted that I stumbled on this site and look forward to meeting many of you. Thanks, MPD

  • I do think there is some correlation. Not a miracle cure, but I lost about 15 lbs without even trying in the first six months of using CPAP. I had never, ever, ever lost weight without trying before. I do think the fatigue of the fibromyalgia and the apnea though also made it almost impossible to diet and exercise as well. I just didn't have the time or energy to put the work in.
  • Hi My name is Mary.
While I myself, don't suffer from this, my hubby does. As far as I can figger, the weight will make you stop breathing and you will wake yourself up serval times a night . therefore you will be tried all day with no energy, and just falling asleep anywhere.

Better sleep at nite = more energy in the day= better weight loss.

I would say to get your machine, work on the weight loss.
Hubby has lost about 12lb and sleeps without it, now its just collecting dust by the bed.
And it is just much nicer not waking up myself, Because every time he stopped I would wake as well. , And then could not sleep again listening to him stopping and starting all nite, (Sometimes used to poke him) to get him breathing again lol. Or lie there and count the seconds that he would stop, like about 1 min 37sec, in the end just get up and sleep somewhere else.
So for those around you it's no fun either lol
I wish you well, it has made such a big difference in our lives.
