Anybody seen the documentary 'Grizzly Man'...

  • ...by Werner Herzog. I just saw it and wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. It's about so much. Obsession, nature, madness, tragedy (?), narcissism - it's basically the director's editing and presentation of footage by this guy called Timothy Treadwell, a manic-delusive but somehow hugely empathetic 'environmentalist' who ends up getting eaten by a bear. Because he used to go right up to bears. And tell them how much he loved them. It's disturbing - deeply - but absolutely brilliant, if you're into abnormal psychology and stuff.

  • Hello..i have seen this documentary..and i have lived in alaska for 30+ years..he was very foolish to believe he could survive with the bears without a gun to protect himself and his girl friend.. a very sad ending..im not for or against guns however this poor man must have had some psychosis to think he could..the photos are breathtaking but still a tragic ending that could have been avoided..rosey
  • Yeah, it's very, very intense. My DH was very fascinated with Tim Treadwell when he was ALIVE... always used him as an example in class when teaching Transcendentalism (English teacher). After he was killed... well, wow. What can you say? As tragic as it was, yes, there was some narcissism there when you realize he brought it on himself.

You would probably like to read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer... same psychological principles at play and very interesting true story.
  • i saw it..its also very interesting to see the animal planet special they had on it. It gave multiple view points from his friends that knew him. But yes...i think there was defiantely some issues with. It is sad that his gf had to die also.
  • Wow, I was watching it for an English class too! On the concept of tragedy, and what it might mean to 'document death'. I'll definitely have to look up 'Into the Wild', when I'm allowed to read for fun again
  • Sounds interesting...I just added it to my Netflix Cue! My husband and I never agree on what to watch together, but I think this is something he'd watch with me.
  • Cool, but be warned - it gave me a nightmare! A very obscure one, but still...
