How long did it take to lose?

  • Our of curiosity...I see there are so many women here with PCOS who have lost weight (Congrats by the way, that's wonderful!) and my question is, how long did it take you to do it? I know for us weight loss is can be much harder with the IR. I've been taking metformin now for about 2 months and my periods have regulated (after NEVER getting them I swear). So from what I understand...having a regular periods (without BCP or other forms to chemically produce it) means that the hormones are working correctly making it easier to lose the weight. I only wonder this because IR is what causes the periods to become out of whack...insulin being a hormone. I really hope that I didnt' write that stupid and no one can understand my question lol. I've know I had PCOS since 2003 with my first gyno who just up and disapeared and my current one (LOVE HER) offically dx me 2006 so you would think I'd be an expert by now.
  • Hi kittiesmom,

I am new here too and honestly can't answer your question. I took Met for 3 months before getting pregnant via IVF at varying levels and never saw a change in weight loss. I got massive headaches and extreme fatigue with it, so bad that I stopped exercising and gained 10 lbs <sigh> I don't think I gave Met enough time or had a high enough dosage (no more than 1000 mg) to see a difference. I just started taking Yasmin bcps today and really hope that helps. I gained alot while pg and haven't lost much in the past 5 months since giving birth. Breastfeeding doesn't work for me as a weightloss tool.

Sorry for rambling and making this about me. From what I've read, PCOS is a frustrating and difficult condition to treat. It seems like it's a lot of trial and error b/c what works for you won't necessarily work for me. It's hard b/c I'm trying to keep up hope while trying different diets, drugs, strategies, etc. It takes a long time to wait and see if something is going to work too. Not seeing results is enough to make anyone nuts.

Anyway, I hope the Met works for you!!! What is your dosage at right now? My dr told me that when I start back taking it (after I'm done breastfeeding), he'll put me on 1500 mg.
  • That's what's so hard about PCOS, everyone has different symptoms and some haven't really had a problem losing weight and some have a really hard time with it. If you watched the last season of The Biggest Loser, Julie said that she had PCOS and she definitely didn't put up the big numbers like some of the other contestants. However, at the finale, she looked amazing! So it can be done. I think those of us with PCOS just have to be patient and keep at it. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is something that you have to commit to for life, so even if it takes us a little bit longer to get there, I still think we can all do it.
