Processed meats, okay or not okay? Too much salt?

  • I was buying a whole roasted chicken in the deli and taking the skin off. I decided that I was getting too much dark meat so started buying meats that are in the plastic packages and are sliced thin by Oscar Meyer. They are low calorie but I am wondering about the salt etc.

    What do you think?

    Thanks!
  • I think I remember Nutrition Support saying that deli meats weren't a great choice but that some were ok once in a while.

Sometimes you are in a hurry & don't have time to cook up something fresh. I get the rotisserie chicken or turkey breasts so I don't have to deal with the dark meat. I also keep a couple packages of Purdue Short Cuts plain roasted chicken breast pieces in the fridge. Sometimes I get the Healthy Choice or Tyson thin deli slice turkey or chicken breast (& sometimes the HC ham) too.

The sodium is higher than if you made your own but if you don't have it everyday it isn't that bad. On those days I have it, I usually don't have a soup & I notice my sodium for the day is well under their recommendations.
