Calories in Birthday Cake...

  • Ok, my youngest daughter's 2nd birthday party is tomorrow and I will be eating a piece of birthday cake. oh my goodness... I can't resist! Birthday cake is MY FAVORITE! Besides, I'm giving up refined flour/sugars for Lent (which starts Wednesday by-the-way) and can't have any white bread, pasta, cake or cookies for 40 days.

I'm planning on eating a piece tomorrow and another one on Tuesday (Fat Tuesday). How many calories do you suppose is in one normal sized piece of birthday cake? I'm going to eat it with all the icing on it too (that's my favorite part)...
  • "Normal Sized" is such a varied term. I try to estimate mine in cubic inches (I usually only eat cakes I bake, and i like to bake square cakes, so this is somewhat easier). FitDay will usually let you input it that way, by the cubic inch. I'd guesstimate 300-400 calories, but that depends on lots of things...the number of layers, the type of icing, the size of the slice...

Just eat the frosting, there's no calories in the frosting, only in the cake.
  • well I looked it up and it's not as bad as you think!!!! 1/12 of a peice of cake, from Chukie heese is only 208 calories inluding whip creme frosting.
  • but i say have the cake and move forward... 1 peice of cake didn't put you overweight~
  • a. No one cuts cake into 12ths...most people cut a standard cake round into 8 or 9 pieces

    b. Whipped cream frosting is lighter than buttercream - do you know which will be on the cake?

Edited to add: Enjoy the cake and move forward! In my opinion, we all need treats every once in a while (and the frosting is my favorite part too). Just try for a small-ish piece and get right back on plan after.
  • if you go to nutridiary.com you can search the foods for cake. They have calorie counts for commercially prepared cake. weigh your piece of cake.. go online and get the cals for however many ounces you had.

Won't be perfect... but it might get you kinda close.

Shoot ya'll... I ordered the cake from this wonderful bakery in town and it will have a mountain of buttercream icing on it! I'm getting dizzy just thinking about the massive amounts of sugar that will be ingested tomorrow! I've already decided that I'm going to have the cake and not feel bad about it. I'm also eating another piece Tuesday night. I'm just going to have to be extra good for a few days surrounding them. AND I'll work out a bit extra too.....

My little girl only has one 2nd birthday - I'm going to enjoy all the hard work I've put into her party and treat myself for losing 8 lbs this week!
  • Well I was not suggesting that anyone does, but this is what is proposed for this size of cake. To be fair, unless you know the EXACT depth & measurement along with ingrediants & topping of the cake she is going to be having, you won't know the exact amount of calories in the peice of cake.
  • I skipped my sons birthday cake...it looked so good to but the thought of it terrified me. nothing tastes better then losing weight!!!!
  • I let myself have a piece of cake on special occasions (had one a few weeks ago at a baby shower). But I limit it to one smaller piece, usually estimate 250-400 calories depending on the type of icing and how big a piece.
  • I don't think having a piece of cake on a special occasion is a big deal at all. Eat the cake, enjoy it and skip the guilt. I'd go ahead and estimate it at 400 calories, just to be on the safe side. You could either count that day as a 'maintenance day' (and eat maintenance calories) or you could subtract 100 cals from every other day this week. Either way, don't feel guilty about it--enjoy your treat and your special occasion.
  • If you want to surprise and please your family with something, then you definitely need to cook this cake.
