Question about losing weight

  • I have been doing the fat smash diet for about a week now and I've lost 11 pounds. My sister says that is way too much weight to lose in 1 week. Since I am so overweight is it really unhealthy? I eat about 2000 calories a day and I'm not starving myself and I exercise for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening since I can't do the whole thing in one segment. Wondering what other people's opinion is.
  • First: Congrats on the weight loss!

Now, 11 lbs a week would only be unhealthy if you continue that for many, many weeks to come. Your first couple of weeks with losing weight (especially the very first week, though) you will see higher numbers as your body drops water weight & adjusts to new food.

Also, those of us who have more to lose often do lose higher numbers for longer periods of time. (I actually lost 6 lbs my first week, and 4 lbs for a couple weeks after that, though it's slowed down a little now.) We cannot expect that every week from now until the end (hah, it'd be so easy to get to goal!) but there's no need to panic if it happens for a few in the beginning.

So, celebrate your losses now, but accept that they may go down to a "normal" weight loss a few weeks from now.
  • Ditto what Faerie said. If you are doing everything in a healthy way and not dropping your calories too low (2000 is a great place to start) then I wouldn't worry about it. The more weight you have to lose the faster it will come off in the beginning.

Congratulations on starting out and getting going!!!
  • yup yup yup--everything Faerie said

It sounds like you've got a good plan in place. 2000 calories is enough to create a deficit for yourself, but not so little you're starving. Keep up the great work!
  • Congrats SouthernGal
I would echo what everyone else has said here. I even think that 2000 calories might even be a little too low for your weight but as long as you feel that you can "handle that" I would stick with it.

You might be able to lose 30 lbs the first month even and you might continue to lose the first 100 lbs faster than some of the rest of us.

Make sure you are taking a multi vitamin though. Losing a lot of weight can cause imbalances in your system so you want to make sure you are getting nutrients from every possible source.

Great to hear that you have joined us!!

Congrats on a great beginning. Hope to hear more progress reports from you on here.
  • Congrats Southerngal!
I lost 20 pounds in the first two weeks and now it is slowing down.
  • Ditto at what they said!! WTG! on taking the step towards loosing!
  • Thank you everyone. I wasn't worried it was just my family. When I told my friend I was doing the diet off of celebrity fit club he asked me if it was anorexia. I know the weight loss will slow down though.
  • Wow - your family must have never watched Celebrity Fit Club, because that is the ONLY weight loss show I have seen that seems to have reasonable goals. Oh well. The best thing you can do is educate them. People are almost always afraid of change.
