I'm 5'5, I eat a 1,500 calorie a day diet. I try to make all my fat from nuts or olive oil. I'm wondering what is a healthy amount for me. I can't find any good info out on the net. What do you guys eat total in a day for fat?
Yummy- I try to keep my fat intake to 30 grams per day.
I try to keep mine around 35-45 per day. My diet log says I can have up to 60, but I think that's too much.
I try to stay in between 20-30% of my total calories from fat. 30% fat is 50 grams if you are eating 1500 calories.
Fat is not the enemy (no pun intended here!) You really do not want to go too low on your fat! Your body needs fat to function properly. When I first started trying to lose weight I was averaging 15-20% of my calories from fat and I started having problems (dry flaky/itchy skin and mood swings being the worst ones.) Bringing my fat intake back up (good fats of course) reversed the problems.
Although in all honesty I think it's more important what kind of fat you are eating versus how much. People in Greece typically consume 40% of their calories from fat. These are the same folks who inspired the Mediterranean diet. Of course most of the fat in their diet is monounsaturated, they eat lots of fish, and limit their red meat consumption. I heard this on NPR awhile back.
The FDA Nutritional Guidelines state that no more than 30% of your total calories should come from Fat and no more than 1/3 of that Fat (or 10% of your total calories) should come from Saturated Fat.
I eat about 1,400 calories per day and keep my Fat closer to 25% (39g) and my Saturated Fat closer to 5% (8g).
I have been doing well by keeping my percent at or under 30. I keep track of it using dailyplate. It makes it so much easier.
We really really do need fat. It helps us absorb nutrients, keeps skin healthy and just keeps our body running. It is generally recommended that people get 20-30% of their calories from fat, with no more than 10% of calories coming from saturated fats.
Did you know that if you eat a salad with fat-free dressing and include no other source of fat in the salad (such as olives or nuts), that you will probably be less able to absorb the nutrients from that healthy salad??
Sources of "good" fat (unsaturated)... are nuts and nut oils, avocados, and fish
So, if you are eating 1500 calories/day, you should be eating between 33 and 50 grams of fat per day. Fats have 9 calories/gram, but one of their advantages is they help keep us feel full... So, have a handful of almonds, or spread a tablespoon of pb on an apple and enjoy!
I don't care how much fat I eat as long as it's coming from good sources, like Olive Oil, Peanut Oil, nuts, avocado, nut butters. It would just be another thing to count for me.
