Do you weigh and measure everything?

  • I try to weigh and measure everything and was wondering if you chicks do too?
  • I definitely measure everything with measuring cups. I don't have a food scale, so I don't do a lot of weighing. I buy my meats in packages of about 1 lb total. That way, when divided into 4 portions (dinner for my partner and I, lunch the next day), each of us gets a 4oz portion raw (which is about 3 oz cooked). I don't weigh out the individual servings, but I know the weight of the total package, so as long as it is approximately evenly divided, it works out in the end.

    I also eyeball my green veggies. If I go over by a quarter cup or so of green veggies, I'm ok with it. Anything else, though (from butternut squash cubes to milk to cereal to popcorn kernels) goes into the measuring cup/spoons
  • Yes! I do have a food scale, because weight is the most accurate measure for most foods. And I use cups and spoons, etc. too. Especially for calorie dense foods like oil, peanut butter, cheese, pasta, and such - measuring is critical for success. It's way too easy to go over by several HUNDRED calories - really!

    Some veggies I will eyeball: spinach, zucchini, button mushrooms, bell pepper. Others have to be measured because they're starchier and more caloric: carrots, peas, corn, etc. For whole fruits I estimate small, medium, or large, or if it's cut/peeled or something, I'll weigh it.
  • Yes - but there are somethings I miss:

    Marinaides for the fish or poultry and sugarless gum. But I am so conservative in other things the difference would not be significant.

  • I also weigh or measure everything. Bought one of those digital food scales & started weighing my veggies too. Much more accurate that way even tho' I have to say that I did NOT get fat because I ate too many string beans!

    I've been on my diet for about 15 months now so I pretty much know what amounts of things look like but I still weigh/measure so I don't start creeping up with my portion amounts.
  • Pretty much everything, yup. I weigh cereal, meat (and poultry and fish), pasta, rice... and measure milk, salad dressing, and just about everything else. I eyeball spinach, but that's about it. Sometimes, it eyeballs me back!
  • I weigh, measure, or count out everything except some meat and veggies. I figure going a little over in say broccoli isn't going to change my calories by enough to worry about. I don't know about the rest of you but I surely didn't get fat by eating too many veggies! I don't eat much meat (never really liked meat all that much, eat mostly vegetarian with some meat occasionally) and when I do I just estimate.

    Though I am not a chick I will chime in

    I measure everything that I eat since I started this, I have measuring spoons, cups and a food scale. I want to be as accurate as possible when I measure out my portions so I can eliminate the human error as much as possible.

    LOL, I meant chicks as in 3 fat chicks on a diet people. You are included.
  • I don't weigh anything but count EVERYTHING including a 5 calorie stick of gum and 10 calorie pack of crystal light. This has seemed to work best for me and helps me to not get too obsessed (or anymore obsessed ) over the foods I'm eating.
  • Yup! I weigh and measure, although I've been doing this long enough to eyeball some things when I'm rushed.

    I thought I'd be able to stop measuring when I hit maintenance, but not so. I still count most days so that I stay where I'm at. It's such a habit now, that I could almost do it in my sleep.
  • I weigh and measure everything except fibrous vegetables. i.e. broccoli, spinach, lettuce, green beans, peppers, etc. It's just not worth it to me to bother with counting those.

    Starchy vegetables get weighed and counted. Same with fruit.
  • I do spot checks. I have a pretty good idea on how much cereal is a 30gm serving, a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese or how big a 3 ounce piece of chicken is but a couple times a week, I plop things in a cup or on a scale just to make sure my vision is still good. Keeps me honest I guess.
  • Yeppp! I count calories based on servings on the back of ingredients list/measuring cups/diet scale, etc.

    It helped me to lose 95 lbs so far!!!
  • Most of what I eat has some sort of serving size on the label (with the frequent exception of dinner). If there is, I measure it, although I try to avoid letting people watch me measure out my cereal and milk, and there are times when I estimate, or just assume something's low enough if it seems so and I have no idea how to measure it.

    It's not all that strict a calorie counting method, but since I'm careful about high calorie foods and I aim low, I think it works.
