Weight loss and Prozac

  • So does anyone know if Prozac helps you lose weight or gain weight? The last time I dieted I lost weight pretty fast but this time Im doing the same thing except the fact that I'm on prozac. I'm not seeing the same results.
  • It CAN help with OCD and Bulimia so for some people it helps with weightloss.
  • Well I have OCD and Anxiety. What I'm trying to ask is it going to be harder forme to lose weight since I am on the prozac?
  • Prozac does help with my OCD, but I have gained a ton of weight. I didn't think it was the meds, but I went off of them for a few days, and really noticed a difference. However, it's the only meds that seem to work for me..... good luck!
  • I started prozac about 2 months ago. I had been taking phentermine for weight loss for quite a while and it wasn't really working any longer. The prozac is helping me lose weight. The combination of the two is better than just the phentermine for stopping the binges too. Haven't had one in over a month. I don't think prozac helps with anxiety.
  • I have been on Prozac for almost 6 mos... Initially I saw a little drop in weight but recently I have been really struggling with carb/sugar cravings and my weight has been fluctuating by about 4 or 5 pds. And I have not been able to get below about 155 or so but I really don't know if it can be blamed on the meds or not...I am under alot of stress currently and I may be premenopausal so it could simply be a slow down of my metabolism or hormonal fluctuation. Sorry I couldn't give you a definitive answer but I have learned by experience that if you think something is affecting your body it is best to investigate. All antidepressants (except possibly Wellbutrin) can have a weight gain effect on certain people...talk to your Dr...maybe ask for a switch...that is about all I can suggest.
  • Most antidepressants cause weight gain, not weight loss. I had that problem on Lexapro - it's one of the things that caused my weight to get so high in the first place. I'm on Wellbutrin now, though, and it doesn't seem to affect my weight one way or the other. So maybe try a different med?
  • I think it depends on the person. I am on prozac and lost/losing weight. Much of my weight problem is because whenever I feel agitated I shove food in my mouth. The prozac takes my agitation edges off, so I don't have my head permanently in the fridge door anymore.

But, I do know that by taking off my edge prozac also makes me less fidgety, and more likely to be content sitting still for long periods. So, I get less "excercise" that way. I read an article once about the different calorie needs of a fidgeter and a non-fidgeter. Blew my mind. Maybe that accounts for why anti-depressants have a rep for making people gain?

If the prozac can help you be happy, I believe that it will help your weight loss in the long-run. Everyone deserves to be happy .
  • Hi, Jtjoray! I remember you from way back when! I just recently began again... starting from nearly the same point I started from last time around.

I've never tried prozac, but I have a friend who was on Paxil, and she said that she felt like it caused her to gain weight. I was on Lexapro, and I didn't notice that it caused me to gain (I was just gaining because I was eating all the time!)... Sorry, I don't have any good answers, I just mostly wanted to say hello, it's nice to see a familiar face, and good luck to you.
