Got Bread?

  • Need some ideas on low calorie bread that is delicious. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Michelle
  • Do you want a bread that is store bought or one to make at home?
  • Preferably store bought.
  • Darn!
I can't find the bread I used to love to eat...I looked all over 2 grocery stores. It was a whole grain kinda nutty bread. Wasn't the lowest calorie on the shelf, but it was tasty and filling. I don't buy it anymore since following low carb. I have occasional pieces of Natures Own Whole Wheat Sugar Free, but that is far and few between! That btw is a pretty good bread. I didn't realize how sweet bread normally is until I ate this sugar-free brand. My husband is from Holland and most European bread is NOT sweet, so this is his favorite. It is 50 calories a slice.

If I were not insulin resistant and looking for a good bread, I would go for a thin slice sourdough. Yum.

Wish I was of more help!
  • mmmm, its very fresh
Hi. In answer to your search for store bought bread, the one that I like is by "sunbeam" whole wheat and is always very very fresh. YOu know..the little squeeze test?,mmmm. It is only 40 calories per slice and it works out to be 2 slices = 1pt. For a snack I often put fat free cream cheese and strawberry jam....who needs margerine or butter when the bread is this fresh!!
  • My favorite store bought bread is from Arnold Bakeries: 100% Natural Whole Wheat...BIG slices @ 90 cal/1 gm fat/3 gm fiber each (1 pt/slice)

For a delightful bread machine bread, I highly recommend the following recipe...not sure of nutritional break down, but it's full of fiber and it tastes SO GOOD!

    "Honey Of An Oatmeal Bread"

    Prep Time: approx. 5 Minutes.
Cook Time: approx. 3 Hours .
Ready in: approx. 3 Hours 5 Minutes.
    Makes 1 - 1 pound loaf (10 servings).

  • Healthy Life Bread
I've been buying a brand called Healthy Life. It comes in different varieties, but I love the Italian bread...

40 cal per slice, 0 fat for one slice, .5 for two. 2 gm fiber for one, 5 gm fiber for two.

Tastes just like sweet white bread, and it is so soft. I'm hooked on it and I make a special trip each week to buy it.
  • redneck,
Do you buy Healthy Life in a mainstream grocery store? Where?
  • I like Dempsters Deli - comes in rye & pumpernickel. 1 Pt per slice and very hearty for sandwiches.
  • I use Merita White lite. It's very good.I don't eat alot of bread but this is the best i have found.
