Lingo Lesson Time for me

  • I was watching the new Life on Mars episodes last night and grabbed some paper to make notes.
    1. stitch up = set up?
    2. Out with the snouts? Huh?
    3. DC? WDC? DS? CID?
    4. Rubbery?
    5. Bang up in a cellar = locked up?
    6. Off his nuts
    7. How big was paper money in the 70s? It looked HUGE!
    8. Bunch of sallys?
    9. Is colored bird referring to a black woman?
    10. Punters with big wings?
    11. Fit him up = set him up?
    12. Like salt or soot (couldn't tell which they said) in a bag

    Thanks everyone.

You'll have to pardon me. I'm an American. I don't speak English.
  • Hi there. I will do what I can.

    1. correct
    2. Snout - informer, aka grass
    3. DC - Detective Constable. I think the W stands for Woman - so Woman detective constalbe - I don't think that term is yused now but that was in the 70's.
    4. Not sure of context? Do you mean Robbery?
    5. Do you mean Banged up in a cell? Yeah locked in.
    6. Off his nuts - mad/nuts/crazy
    7. Cannot remember money being huge but I know our £5 got smaller. In the very olden days it was HUGE.
    8. Not sure - would have to know the conversation but I would take to mean effeminate men. Not always meaning they look that way but that the way the men were doing something was not good enough - we also say "What a Wendy" when men do something daft - i.e "Just like a girl" not very pc but then the prog isn't.
    9. I would think so - women were birds back then and we said coloured then thinking it more 'polite'!!
    10. Not sure perhaps someone else can tell you - I never watched the prog.Depending on what they were talking about - it could mean high fliers I guess. i.e. those with money or in high places?
    11. correct
    12. No idea

Sorry hope some of this helped. Now you know how we feel with all the American stuff on tv!!!

Hopefully someone else can help with this.
  • Thanks, peacock. I hope some of the others respond. My DH, boobalah, backed the program up the other night and asked me to write down the snouts one.
